  • 1.  DNF 64 bits versus DNF 32 bits

    Hello,
We understand DNF 64 bits will run on AIX 7.3 LPARs.
We understand DNF 32 bits is running on AIX 7.2 LPARS.

We have our NIM LPAR where our official "AIX TOOLBOX repository is located.
    This is our "YUM" server.

If a client yum LPAR need to update a rpm package, then it will be dowloaded from our "YUM" Server, not from IBM sites.

    • If we migrate from YUM to DNF (32 bits)  on our NIM LPAR, i suppose our client yum LPAR will still be able to download needed rpm packages.

    • But if we migrate YUM to DNF (64 bits) on our NIM LPAR, what will happen to our historic YUM clients LPARs ?

We thank you very much for your help,

    Christophe

YUM and DNF are software that install packages on your system. They do their work "here", on the LPAR on which they are running.

There really isn't any server component to them, they just fetch package metadata and contents from an HTTP server. So there should not be an impact on any of your clients when you update to DNF on the server that just happens to also be the HTTP server for the packages.

As an example, my AIX DNF (and YUM before that) clients use a RHEL 8.5 x86_64 system as their package repository. There's obviously no dependency between the package manager on my RHEL system and YUM or DNF on the AIX systems.

    Hope that helps,

    Thank you Stephen.

Hi Christophe As Stephen mentioned dnf or yum or reposync on your repo server (nim server) is only used to fetch RPMs from AIX toolbox and other tools (createport_c) are for creating repodata. So it does not matter if they are 32 bit or 64 bit on server as they will still be able to download all the packages.
I hope this clarifies your doubt.
