  • 1.  Console access when HMC unavailable

    Posted Tue May 07, 2024 10:52 AM

    Hi,

    Our HMC is working fine (except memory leak), but if it would be unavailble - is there a way to access an lpar console?

    Today I use the vtmenu from the HMC, but it would be good to know how to do it wihout it. In a case of a ransomware, the network may be down, so the HMC would not be useful (even with multiple hmc's).

    Thanks!

    //Fredric

    Hi Fredric,

    your managed system configured to use HMC console. So the quick answer is no, you can't do it without HMC if you connected the system to HMC.

    The long answer and in case you don't trust the network or your original HMC might be hacked - install virtual box or vmware workstation on your laptop and install virtual hmc into it. Get the HMC cable out of your managed system and connect your own virtual HMC to the system. You can get virtual HMC trial code for free from the IBM's site and it is enough to survive several weeks till your original HMC is fixed.

    Hi Andrey,

    Thank you for the reply. That is what I expected, but thanks for the tips about the virtual HMC.

    Other things to consider..

    1). The HMCs have multiple network connections. The network your Power hosts are on should not be accessible from anywhere else (don’t have a router at .1 (or whatever) that routes off the network, HMC and power systems should be only thing on that network
    The other network connections on the HMC can go to “public” networks. (Those that a user could come in to the web interface, or ssh over).

    2) Have redundant HMCs configured.

    If you get hit with ransomware, if you can get to the HMC, physically or over a network, then the power system consoles should be accessible.

    Hi Tom,

    thanks for your input.

    I have the servers in three data centers, so I need to buy some more HMC's.
