bind.rte in AIX 7300-01-01

  • 1.  bind.rte in AIX 7300-01-01

I see in the AIX 7.3.1 Release Notes that the old bind filesets are being replaced:

BIND version 9.16 is included in the bind.rte fileset in AIX 7.3, Technology Level 1, base media package. The bind.rte fileset is not installed by default. During migration from the previous AIX version to AIX 7.3, Technology Level 1, the bos.net.tcp.bind and bos.net.tcp.bind_utils filesets that are installed on the previous AIX versions are removed, and the bind.rte BIND fileset is installed. During the update operation, the bind.rte fileset must be explicitly selected for installation. Otherwise, the bos.net.tcp.bind and bos.net.tcp.bind_utils BIND filesets remain in the updated system.

So I've updated one of my servers to 7300-01-01, but I did not see this until now and my server still has the hold bos.net.tcp.bind* filesets. Is there a way to switch to the new bind.rte now that I'm already at 7300-01-01?

    Hi Robert,

The BIND version 9.16 is included in the bind.rte fileset in AIX 7.3, Technology Level 1 in the base media but it is not getting installed by default.

As mentioned in the release note "During the update operation, the bind.rte fileset must be explicitly selected for installation. Otherwise, the bos.net.tcp.bind and bos.net.tcp.bind_utils BIND filesets remain in the updated system", Please select the
BIND version 9.16 fileset bind.rte explicitly during update otherwise you will still have old BIND filesets and there will be issues. Please follow the instruction mentioned in the release note and let me know if you still sees any issue.

    Thanks!

I'm not sure what "Please select the BIND version 9.16 fileset bind.rte explicitly during update" means. Could you be more specific?

I've been doing updates, migrations, etc. on AIX since 4.3.2. Normally this kind of thing is handled during the migration upgrade, but I've already migrated these from 7.2 to 7.3 earlier last year, then recently did an update_all operation to make the TL jump from 7300-00-02 to 7300-01-01. So what kind of operation should I be doing now?

    Thanks,
    Rob

    Hi Robert,

As you already did the update_all operation to make the TL jump from 7300-00-02 to 7300-01-01, now you just need to install the the BIND version 9.16 fileset bind.rte from AIX 7.3, Technology Level 1 base media. Installing the new BIND version 9.16 will also automatically remove the old bind filesets bos.net.tcp.bind and bos.net.tcp.bind_utils.

Please let me know if you have any further question.

    Thanks!

    Hi Dimpu,

    Thanks for the info.

I installed bind.rte (7.1.916.2600), which as expected, automatically removed the old bind filesets bos.net.tcp.bind and bos.net.tcp.bind_utils.

When running lppchk -v, I get:

lppchk: The following filesets need to be installed or corrected to bring
the system to a consistent state:

bos.net.tcp.bind_utils 7.2.0.0 (not installed; requisite fileset)

This is unexpected, as installing bind.rte, removes that fileset.

    Any suggestions?  Thanks.

    John

John, I had the same issue. What filesets depend on bos.net.tcp.bind_utils on your server? I was able to look at them by doing "lppchk -vm3". The ones that showed up were older, obsolete (at least I hope) filesets that I was able to remove.

    Thanks Robert.

I had one dependant fileset: bos.net.tcp.client, Removing this should be safe, as it is replaced by newer filesets.

I guess updating bos.net.tcp.client to 7.3.1.0 would fix this error.

I also tried same steps to update AIX as of yours and I dont have this error, since bos.net.tcp.client is updated to 7.3.1.0 in my server.

    Dimpu,

Hi, I've had the same issue when at 7.3.1.1

    # lppchk -v
lppchk: The following filesets need to be installed or corrected to bring
the system to a consistent state:

bos.net.tcp.bind_utils 7.2.0.0 (not installed; requisite fileset)

Running with -vm3 I see the following:

    # lppchk -vm3
lppchk: The following filesets need to be installed or corrected to bring
the system to a consistent state:

bos.net.tcp.bind_utils 7.2.0.0 (not installed; requisite fileset)

lppchk: The following describes dependencies from installed filesets
on one or more of the filesets listed above:

    Fileset bos.net.tcp.client 7.3.0.0 requires:
      bos.net.tcp.bind_utils 7.2.0.0

    Fileset idsldap.clt64bit62.rte 6.2.0.16 requires:
      bos.net.tcp.bind_utils 7.2.0.0

    Fileset idsldap.cltbase62.adt 6.2.0.16 requires:
      bos.net.tcp.bind_utils 7.2.0.0

    Fileset idsldap.cltbase62.rte 6.2.0.16 requires:
      bos.net.tcp.bind_utils 7.2.0.0

We can't change the idsldap version (we did upgrade however the App team said it didn't play nicely with SAP so we had to revert).

Question: Is it a case of "just" installing bos.net.tcp.bind_utils (for 7.3.0.1) which I can do OR does something else need to be done?

Comment: I do have 7.3.1.1 LPARs with the following and it doesn't seem to be causing any issues as far as I know.  Your thoughts?

    # lslpp -L | grep -i bind
      bos.net.tcp.bind 7.3.0.1 CE F TCP/IP BIND Server
      bos.net.tcp.bind_utils 7.3.0.1 CE F TCP/IP BIND Utility
      bos.net.tcp.traceroute 7.3.0.0 C F TCP/IP BIND traceroute
      bos.rte.bind_cmds 7.3.1.0 C F Binder and Loader Commands

    Many thanks, Steve

    Update

"For now" I've simply loaded "bos.net.tcp.bind_utils" as that does seem to resolve the lppchk -vm3 reported issue/error.

    Hi Steve Munday,

For "lppchk -v" error we have workaround to fix the issue as below.

     export ODMDIR=/etc/objrepos

    odmget -q lpp_name=bos.net.tcp.client product | grep -w -v bos.net.tcp.bind_utils > /tmp/bos.net.tcp.bind_utils

    export ODMDIR=/etc/objrepos

    odmdelete  -o bos.net.tcp.client

    odmadd  /tmp/bos.net.tcp.bind_utils

    savebase

    Thanks,

    Sharada
