  • 1.  AIX 7.1 Migration to AIX 7.3

Planning to migrate from AIX 7.1 to AIX 7.3.
Currently POWER8 servers are holding AIX 7.1 LPARs. We are moving to POWER10 servers.
My understanding is we cannot upgrade AIX 7.1 to AIX 7.3 in POWER8 first and then move to POWER10 because it is not supporting.
Also AIX 7.1 we cannot move to POWER10 first and then upgrade to AIX 7.3 which is also not supporting
Our storage is in Nimble which contains AIX 7.1 LPARS filesystem
Kindly suggest a good method to upgrade and migrate it without any issue

    Hi

You can upgrade from AIX 7.1 to AIX 7.3 on Power8 and then move to Power10. You can also move your LPARS on AIX 7.1 to Power10, provided that the Processor compatibility at profile level must be Power8 and then do the migration to AIX 7.3 on Power10.

What we are doing is upgrading to AIX 7.2 on Power8, then moving using LPM to Power10 (LPARS are created with Processor Compatibility Power9) and then in a second round we upgrade to AIX 7.3.

That Nimble storage, is it HP ??? If there's a HP ODM you should review if there's a version for AIX 7.3.

As Cesar wrote, AIX 7.3 _is_ supported on power8 (most models).

This page is a great reference for such information: https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/system-aix-maps

    Hi Suthan,

AIX 7.3 is supported on Power8 hardware.  P8 CPUs are the oldest that 7.3 will run on.  AIX 7.1, with the application of the required TL & SP is supported on Power10 when fully virtualised.  Check the Redbook for your new Power10 hardware for the minium OS requirements.

    We did this exact migration.
upgrade to AIX 7.3 while on POWER8 and then move the LPARs to POWER 10.

    Someone asked for more detail.

We did alt disk upgrades from AIX 7.1 direct to AIX 7.3 on the POWER 8.

We ran those LPARs in POWER 8 mode on the POWER 8 both before and after.

New VIO servers were built on the POWER 10

LPAR configuration was done on POWER 10

We SAN boot so all the LPARs disks were assigned to the new VIO servers

AIX did need some changes as did some applications due to POWER 10 mode.

For the HA systems we moved the passive node to POWER 10 and then did a HA resource move.

    Hi

I recall AIX 7.1 TL5 SP3 being the minimum OS level/version which can run on POWER10(P8 compatibility mode)

    my 2c...

-If you planning on migrating one of your own AIX LPAR's which doesn't have any Application's running etc...example a NIM environment then I would first perform a migration installation from AIX7.1 to AIX7.2/AIX7.3 on current POWER8; thereafter migrate the AIX LPAR to POWER10.

-If you are planning on migrating AIX LPAR's which are running Applications, I would approach the migration with a little more caution.

-Try to take the LPAR across to the P10 in its current state i.e AIX 7.1 (see minimum level above)

-Confirm with the Application Team that all is still working as it should now that you running on the POWER10.

-Plan to perform the migration installation from AIX7.1 to AIX7.2/AIX7.3 at a later stage to benefit from IBM Support,Security & Performance enhancements which comes with later versions of AIX.

    Regards
