  • 1.  AIX 6.1 on power8

Hi I'm a former IBMer, worked as a contractor and IBMer for 19 years. Now I'm an AIX sys admin for a private company in Austin.

We are migrating our AIX LPARS to new power8 and power9 machines in another city.. Some of our customers want to stay at 6.1.

I have never run an AIX 6.1 LPAR on a power8 machine. Can it be done? What will happen if you do?

    Thanks for any advice.

    according to: https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/lpar-wont-boot-power-8-machine

it can be done if you're at the proper levels..
also, you may need to set the compatibility mode for the spar... but, a bit of digging you may find it'll run just fine native.

    I concur with Tom
Update to AIX 6.1 TL9 sp11 or higher - this should have been done MANY years ago to remove as many fixed bugs as possible.
The POWER8 server LPAR should be set to POWER6 mode.
There is absolutely no support what-so-ever from IBM - if purchase support for others then check the contact details of what "support" really means!
Should run fine but you are on your own.
