  • 1.  Upgrades to a system initially configured as a full system partition?

    Posted Wed March 30, 2022 10:26 PM
Hi!  Is an upgrade possible to add resources and create additional LPARs to a system that was initially configured as a single full-system-partition?  There clearly is room for additional processors and memory on the system in question, but I was wondering whether there are any other restrictions on creating new partitions on a system that's configured to possess all the hardware resources that I may not have thought of so far. TIA!

    Hi Carlo,

    There is no limitation.

However, if you want to create a VIOS LPAR/LPARs to virtualize the I/O, the machine needs a PowerVM license (which may or may not be already on the system).

    Hi Carlo

You cannot start any other partitions when the Full System Partition is running.
    Here is the reference: https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/aix/7.2?topic=concepts-full-system-partition
You will be able to create additional LPARs after you change the profile setting of the current full-system partition.

Odds are that one partition on there was built with the option set to use all resources on the machine.  If that's the case, then no you won't be able to create any additional partitions until you do something about that.

I believe all Power9 machines and above come with PowerVM licensing already.  At least that's my experience from scale-out machines and above.

Thanks for the replies so far!

So to follow this thought, as well as the linked documentation, can I then add additional cores/memory/adapters, create a new partition profile for the existing full system partition but configure its own existing resources to it, then create new partitions on the newly added resources?

Again, might there be any installation/implementation time issues like additional configuration in ASMI, etc.?

If powerVM license is already availabe in your machine, you can just change the profile configuration of existing partition (to not use all the system resources) and create new partition splitting the existing resource. In this case you can test before actually upgrading the hardware resources.

I have worked with some machines where virtualization feature is not enabled. If this is the case you might not be able to create new partition after adding additional resource.

Carlo, yes it is possible. First step -what kind of hardware you have. what is existing hardware used by whole system.  you have to reduce the existing full system to use less resouce then create new lpar from the resource. you need network and disk IO and cpu and memory to get your new lpar.
