Azure API Management vs IBM World (IIB VS API Connect VS Cloud Pak for Integration)

    Hi everyone,

Does anyone can help me out with this comparison.

IBM has a set of integration options, IIB, Api Connect, CP4I and I need to understand which are the most important characteristics that I need to consider to select one.

After that I need to know how can I compare it with Azure APIM.
What I need to take into account? It's a problem/solution theme, complexity, development, security, extensibility, others

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi Filipe,

v10 of API Connect takes the cake over Azure APIM any day.
API Connect has a much better user interface when it comes to developing, debugging and testing APIs. Its a one stop shop and its improving vastly with every fix-pack release. When it comes to security both offer pretty much the same and allows you to write custom policies too. The v10 APIC installation is straight forward. I've done it on VMWare and on a container based environment.

For your question around API Connect, IIB and CP4I it is a bit hard to comment without details. IIB and APIC have their own characteristics. If your integration scenario was to provide a solution around traditional integration patterns of mapping and transforming large requests from SOAP/ASCII/EBCIDC etc to another format then IIB would be the choice. If your integration scenario are simple then API Connect would be it.

As for CP4I, its not really an integration product but a bundle of IBMs integration products. CP4I makes it easier to build an integration environment from scratch with just a few clicks. Its amazing when run on a cloud environment. You can have a fully running API Connect or IIB or DataPower running within minutes.

I've personally had the privilege to work with each of them on a daily basis. After using CP4I, you ask yourself how have we made it so far without this. Its another level and completely different ball game.

This is just my own personal opinion built through many years of experience with IBM Integration products like API Connect, IIB, MQ and DP.

Hi Filipe & Rosh, I would say that CP4I is much more than a bundle of the various products. All Cloud Paks include Foundational (aka Common) Services (like License Service, Tracing, Identity Management... - see a complete list here: IBM Cloud Pak foundational services - IBM Documentation) which can be used to operate your environment exactly the same way across all deployment patterns. Which brings me to the 2nd big advantage of using Cloud Paks over stand-alone products: regardless whether you run it in your own data center or on IaaS/PaaS in any Cloud: you have the same licensing, programming and operational model as well as the same functionalities. You can shift licenses for functionalities you need, when you need and where you need it. Just some initial thoughts on CP4I....

Regarding  IBM API Connect vs. Azure API Gateway: API Connect is a full lifecycle API Management solution which includes everything from API Developer, Portal, Management and API Gateway. Azure API Gateway is a Gateway for Microsoft Services.  You can read a good comparison from Gartner here: IBM API Connect vs Microsoft Azure API Management 2022 | Gartner Peer Insights

I hope that help and good luck, Peter
