Mileage certainly varies heavily in regards to best practices and depends on individual usecase.
One starting point could be the "IBM DataPower Handbook 2nd Edition Volume I-VI" available as paperback and eBook (for Kindle). I'm not advertising this for commercial reasons here, I really enjoyed those and found them helpful for my personal education and to apply suggestions while managing my systems. Also, though written over five years ago, a big part of the mindset should still be helpful.
For further suggestions I hope the community here enjoys to chime in.
