Automated Testing

It's been a year since I last did this and it's not documented, but to install a new license on a remote license server for ZD&T, do the emulated Z instances need to be stopped? I think that I didn't bother last year and it was all okay and it's slightly different for hardware based licenses as you need to remove the token for a short period of time. Presumably, the software license server will load the new license key at some point.

Hey Sebastian,  whilst like you I have renewed my software licenses while ZOS is up and running (the ZD&T heartbeats to the License server now and again, and if a license is not available halts ZOS),  you do run a risk that if you run into problems renewing the license for an extended period your systems will halt.  Having  a backup of your ZD&T ZOS volumes and if the running systems are not business critical might mitigate that risk.

Well I looked in the logs for last year and it looks like I didn't stop anything (last awsstart was 705 days ago) but to be on the safe side, we'll be shutting down anyway. As it has to be done before the weekend, backups of z/OS volumes won't be done as there are over 600 of them but there are other backups available anyway. One of the more interesting things about this license is how it is reported. Using the 'query_license' command reports back that the license will run out on the correct date but using the 'token' command tells me that it will run out 1/27/2476 which is pretty impressive!
