Definitely a noob question here. I know IBM has a wealth of documentation on just about everything, but I'm feeling a little overwhelmed with "knowledge". Has anyone had experience setting up the Java, WebSphere and z/OSMF environment(s) on an existing z/OS implementation? If so, where did you start and what documentation was most helpful?

Thanks in advance for your advice!

    Hi Bill,
I saw this post was rather old, but had no replies.  I just joined the Community, so I hope it is still useful.  To set up a new z/OSMF environment there's several places you can go to learn about how to do that.  Some of the easiest material to browse through is conference presentations so you can get a quick look at the overview of the tasks involved.  I like this session:  https://events.share.org/Winter2019/Public/SessionDetails.aspx?FromPage=Sessions.aspx&SessionID=7879&SessionDateID=43

This will point you to the official documentation:  z/OSMF Configuration Guide https://www.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSLTBW_2.4.0/com.ibm.zos.v2r4.izua300/abstract.htm

A couple of hints I'll give you:
    • if you can, please try to use the default values provided.  If you use different values, you might find yourself "disconnected".  Debug on z/OSMF (in my opinion) isn't the easiest, so keeping defaults when you can will help you.
    • the security part is absolutely the hardest part!  It will be about 90% of your work to get z/OSMF up and running.  If you are a RACF user, we have a ton of security samples which you can model after.  If you are not RACF, please contact your ESP vendor, as I believe they have samples (but you'd need to verify that yourself).   Become very good friends with your security admin.  This person will deserve a pizza lunch after z/OSMF is up and running.  The great news is, once you do this huge initial work, after that, it is very very small pieces of additional work and mostly based on you wanting to use new applications in z/OSMF.  This person should only get a cup of coffee at that point :).
    • Once you get enough of z/OSMF up to logon to, use the Security Configuration Assistant!  That will really help you to set see if you have security problems with subsequent plug-ins and functions.  This should be your "go to" location once you've got it set up.
    • As I said, in my opinion, debug is harder on z/OSMF than traditional new functions.  This presentation is excellent to help you find problem determination location information:  https://events.share.org/Winter2019/Public/SessionDetails.aspx?FromPage=Sessions.aspx&SessionID=7880&SessionDateID=45
Last, but not least, please use the z/OSMF One Stop Hub to get you in the right direction for looking at functions and help.  There are a lot of short videos on the functions, and these will give you a good sense of what these functions do, how they look, and how to maneuver in them:  https://ibm.github.io/zOSMF/
