  • 1.  Problem with z/OSMF ServerPac Portable Software Instance

    Posted Thu June 02, 2022 12:20 PM

I'm making my first foray into standing up a new z/OS system using a z/OSMF ServerPac portable software instance and I've hit a roadblock.

Everything is all good until the IZUD01DL download job completes. It completes with RC 0 and everything appears to be downloaded successfully but when I try to proceed from "Add Portable Software Instance From Download Server (Step 3 of 4)" to "Add Portable Software Instance From Download Server (Step 4 of 4)" I'm getting msgid IZUD219E saying that the portable software instance file doesn't exist. I checked the download destination directory and indeed the file isn't there.

But – it is getting downloaded and then it's disappearing when the IZUD01DL job completes. Any ideas what about what could be going wrong?

    Details follow...

    Message IZUD219E text:

    Alan,

I'm not quite deep into the process, but what apparently doesn't look good for me is the following line contained in your job's output:

    smpeCC:16 smpeRoutine:GIMJVGET smpeMsgLen:0000000000

This would at least be my first point to start inspection from - this and the fact that your download directory is empty after your job finishes allures me that you might probably encounter space constraints or maybe hit some nasty timeouts because of temporary connection inactivity...

At least I don't know for sure, so sorry for being so inaccurate. At least I'd start research at the time the above message was received.

    Kind regards

Thanks Dietmar. This is indeed a huge order so it's definitely a possibility that space or timeout could be factor.

    Hi Alan,

Would you please confirm if applicable fixing ptf is applied to the driving system you are using?

    z/OS V2R3 HSMA234 = UI78423
    z/OS V2R4 HSMA244 = UI78422
    z/OS V2R5 HSMA254 = UI78421

If not applied, you may need to get it applied.  Restart z/OSMF Server before you attempt to add downloaded Portable Software Instance.

Ahh, I think this is the culprit. It looks like UI78421 is not applied. I think I'll go ahead and switch to a CustomPac install for now (before it goes away!) so I can get the target system stood up (I don't manage the driving system and I don't know how many hoops I'd have to jump through to have someone apply the fix for me).

I am having the exact same issue.  I have recently applied RSU2310.  So, I would expect all service needed to be applied.

The PTFs required on your driving system to support the installation of a new z/OS release may or may not yet be associated with an RSU.  To ensure you have all the necessary PTFs installed, please use the SMP/E Fix Category IBM.DrivingSystem-RequiredService.

To determine if you are missing any of the required PTFs, first obtain the latest HOLDDATA from IBM using your preferred method and receive it into the SMP/E global zone for your driving system.  The HOLDDATA contains information to associate fix categories to PTFs.  Then run the SMP/E REPORT MISSINGFIX command to identify PTFs associated with fix categories that are not yet installed, like this:

    SET BDY(GLOBAL).
    REPORT MISSINGFIX ZONES(ZOS24)
    FIXCAT(IBM.DrivingSystem-RequiredService).

Specify the target zone name for your driving system on the ZONES operand.  If any PTFs are identified in the report, they are missing.  That is, they are required for installing a ServerPac Portable Software Instance but are not yet installed.  You must install them before installing a ServerPac Portable Software Instance.

Kurt – thank you very much.  This appears to have resolved the issue.
