IBM Z and LinuxONE IBM Z

I've always wondered if those institutions made the mistake of not exploiting IBM Z and Linux on the mainframe while chasing "lower" costs by migrating to RHEL virtualize under VMWare?

This is indeed an interesting question. Do you know institutions who made this decision. It would be a good point to check if the x86 world would have been really lower on cost.

The options on the mainframe (zSystems and LinuxONE) are huge. Are you running Linux on the mainframe? And if yes what is your experience?

I was unable to convince the former IT management team at NYU that even a POC using Linux could prove how cost effective virtualize on the z10 would negate the million dollar per year zOS/maintenance costs a poorly negotiated relationship with IBM.

They failed to see the forest by  focusing only on the tree.

The end result was millions spent on migrating to a unreliable VMWare/Hitachi/Dell storage solution, increased staffing, and a chaotic DR recovery process.

They traded the centralized control of the environment for the cheapest and vulnerable thing out there.

We switched from x86 to z/VM long ago. We do have some VMWare folks around but we've mostly consolidated our Linux servers on a z16. With options like zPro it can make managing the systems pretty easy.
