  • 1.  First steps introducing z/OSMF to client z/OS environments

Is there a good project plan the community could advise to acquire and introduce the z/OSMF infrastructure to z/OS environment at ZOS210 ZOS220 ZOS230?  It was posted recently that ZOS240 will require a z/OSMF environment to be able to install it (ZOS240).  What is best practice for getting this significant infrastructure installed?

    Hi Lynn,

The best place to start is IBM's Content Solutions - https://www.ibm.com/support/z-content-solutions/management-services/.  There is a general overview and introduction, and then you can dig down to find all the resources, documents, links, and steps that you need.

    Best regards,

    Cheryl

    Hi Lynn,
You've got a lot of good questions in there!  Cheryl's already got the best place to start to learn about how to install z/OS with z/OSMF - the Content Solution.  There's also a little sample package there so that you can learn it with a "real" portable software instance.  (Thanks, Cheryl!)

A couple of clarifications:  you say "ZOS240 will require a z/OSMF environment to be able to install it (ZOS240)".  z/OS V2.4 will not install with z/OSMF.  Starting with z/OS V2.5, you have a choice (until July 10, 2022) how you want z/OS V2.5 to install with ServerPac.  Your ServerPac installation choice up to July 10, 2022 is:  old CustomPac ISPF dialogs -or- z/OSMF Software Management.  You specify that during the Shopz ordering process.  After July 10, 2022, to install z/OS V2.5 with ServerPac, it will be z/OSMF Software Management only.    CBPDO is unaffected.
Note that z/OS V2.4 hasn't been orderable for a while now, so I'm not sure if that was a typo.  Maybe you meant that you wanted z/OS V2.4 to install z/OS V2.5, and to do that after July 10, 2022.

You have another question:  how to "introduce the z/OSMF infrastructure to z/OS environment at ZOS210 ZOS220 ZOS230?"  Depending on the z/OS release, z/OSMF configuration process has undergone some enhancements.  Generally, you can check out the z/OSMF Configuration Guide for each of those levels to understand the steps involved.  On the highest releases, it has gotten considerably simpler.  However, the security set up remains the most difficult by far.  Depending on your External Security Manager, I'd suggest using the provided sample jobs for security by IBM and the other ISV.  These have been tried and true, and if you can use defaults, you'll be better off.

z/OSMF wasn't added to z/OS until V2.2.  So I'm not sure at this point why you'd want z/OSMF useable by z/OS V2.1 (EOS 2018), because anything that old is probably "let it be" mode.  V2.2 was EOS in 2020, so ditto for that one.

If you have more questions, please just reply to the thread.
