    Hi ,

    To HCL,

It's very sad, after 21 years after IBM bought Informix, I still hear (read) from other IT companies this:

"We've also been hearing that Informix might reach end-of-life soon, which would be something we'd have to consider as we think about a native integration."

I'm researching a tool to make and maintain a decent data dictionary of our databases where Informix is our main database.
All the major players on the market for this type of tool either do not support Informix or have very poor and limited support.

I have no problem asking them if they can implement better support to allow us to consider purchasing the product.
The quote above was a response I got from one of these vendors...

It's about time that HCL invests a little in marketing Informix to at least say that Informix is still alive. , is not??

    Hello,

100% true. Fewer and fewer tools are being developed with Informix as the reference DB, especially around the use of Informix in web development.
IBM and HCL have never invested in a future but are only harvesting the fruits of the Informix tree planted in the 80's...
When I have to hire new IT people and I talk about Informix, none of them know this DB and yet I still think it is the best ...
We use informix since 1991 and the question is seriously raised to migrate to PostgreSQL ...

    What a pity

    Cesar:

For now you can respond that: "If IBM were going to be end-of-life'ing Informix they would not be spending money to produce a new major release. Informix v15 is scheduled for release in 2023! They also would not have spent money in 2021 & 2022 to make significant performance and feature improvements to Informix v14!"

Unfortunately it's not on HCL to market Informix, it is on IBM who still owns the product (HCL is only responsible for physically developing the code and supporting the product). Unfortunately IBM does not market products, they only market IBM and "ideas" like "Smart Cities" and "Hybrid Cloud". <SIGH>

You see more ads for OneDB  (IDS V14) per week than you see for Informix per year. We have migrated a number of customers to OneDB2

    Cheers

    Hi Art,

Yes, I did something like that.
I forward the link of the roadmap from the IIUG to them.

However, I'm just a customer, this work should be done by IBM+HCL , not me!!!

I already  spend my time trying to help, improve Informix here in Brazil,
We see nothing from IBM/HCL giving any  advertising  , merchandise, or marketing of their products.
So, I just give up and shutdown my blog...
The next step is to give up being an Informix DBA...  since no one hears about the product, doesn't believe what they are capable of and consequently, there is no WORK for Informix DBA.
My felling is: What exists of Informix over the world is old systems which haven't been replaced yet.  When they start to be replaced (one-day thats coming)... it will not be with Informix...

    Hello Cesar,

it's the old discussion of how IBM places individual products on the market. As Art has already written, IBM always promotes only global trends and not the products in detail that are included in the respective tools. Example Cloud Pack for Data (CP4D) for which Informix can also be selected as back-end.

As we are aware of this IBM marketing strategy, we have been successfully promoting (with IBM support) our Informix Managed Service offering on the web and at major international sporting events (rail and video whale in show jumping stadiums) for years. Feel free to repost these links for example https://lnkd.in/ezMWg9_c and https://lnkd.in/g8U8U_Xm .

We have a comparative discussion in terms of cost, functionality, and sustainability of the product with every new Informix customer. The new and old customers love Informix. It has never been more efficient in terms of cost per transaction. The support is excellent and the roadmap is there for many years.
The developers and support people from IBM and HCL are doing a great job!

And the market is looking for such a technology product as Informix for OLTP, IoT, and Data Analytics.

So it's better to advertise Informix a bit more yourself than to join the competitors' slogans.

    Have fun, Henri

    Hello Cesar,

While we support several database brands with our Genero development tool, the Genero BDL language is based on the Informix 4GL / Informix database, and the IDS engine is still used by a wide range of our customers.

You may want to have a look at Genero Studio and its Database Designer component:

    https://4js.com/products/genero-enterprise/

To us Genero + Informix is still one of the best solutions for business applications.
