    Hi,

I have read about some advantages on use onpladm for backups. I don't find any examples, can someone give me some help how to backup one entire database with it.

    Thanks,

    Sérgio,

onpladm is an utility to create jobs for HPL (High Performance Load). This works on a table level and not on a database level. Besides that, HPL is somehow deprecated as you can have similar functionality (and performance) with external tables.

I believe that Art's tools (myexport?) allow you to export a database using external tables... may be worth checking...

    Regards.

I agree with Fernando. Onpladm and so the HPLoader is the wrong tool to do text level archiving of databases. You could, as Fernando suggests, use my dbexport/dbimport replacement tool package, myexport, which uses external tables, but honestly I don't know why you would not just use ontape/onbar?

The real problem with using HPLoader, dbexport, or myexport is that these are table by table exports which means that if the database is being actively used the export files will not be internally consistent across related tables. You may export a parent table just before a new row is inserted then export the child table that has new rows referencing the new parent row that will not be in the output. Similarly for deleted parents if the child table is exported first. Myexport has a feature to prevent the latter scenario, but you cannot avoid both and so the first scenario is all too real. It can even happen using myexports parallel export mode. Though that can minimize the possibilities, if your database has many tables, your system will not be able to handle exporting say 15000 tables in parallel, so this may not be a viable option.

So, I implore you, please post the problem you are trying to solve, not the solution you can't get to work!

Thanks for your replies Fernando and Art,
The problem, I am trying to solve is to find a way to clone my database to another with minimal downtime.

    Thanks Paul,

I have listened some information about CDR command and it seems very useful, besides the information on documentation as it have lots of options, there are more practical examples?

Nagarugi did a good presentation on this as the SLUG conference earlier in the year - should be on www.iiug.org

I use cdr migrate in preference to ifxclone - just find it easier

    Cheers

    Thanks Art,

I did some testing to install RSS and HDR servers but got strange results so I continued to use the old methods ...

    John:

HPL is not deprecated. It is just used less frequently because external tables are simpler to use and perform a little faster on some data sets, a bit slower on others. It's just much easier to set up an external table export/import than an HPL job.

onpladm is still around.  While I do prefer external tables because of ease of use, HPL still has a place for fast unloads or loads.

Documentation is on the IBM website.

Just search for informix and High-Performance Loader User's Guide...that will get you there.
