(mkcd and mkdvd use the cdrecord package routines cdrecord and readcd
to write to CD's and DVD's.)
    I have attached a DVD/CD R/W drive to a 8203-E4A system with a SAS
bus via the half high media option bay on the front of the system.
With a little effort I am able to write CD; but am unable to
read or write a DVD via the cdrecord package. (That is; I can not
get cdrecord of readcd to write a DVD!)
I keep getting "Cannot send SCSI cmd via ioctl" error messges.
Plextor assures me that their drive is fully compliant with ATAPI/mmc
which is what is required by the cdrecord package.

    Bye,
    Dwight

After many years of effort I have run into a road block.
    1) cdrtools version 3.01a07 is unable to write to a DVD because
cdrecord is receiving a "impossible error code" from the AIX
    driver.
    2) IBM ONLY supports the use of cdrecord 1.9-7 via AIX supplied
applications/scripts. That is; like smit, mkcd and mkdvd.
cdrecord 1.9-7 is NO LONGER supported by the application
creator. It has been replaced by cdrtools.
    3) IBM ONLY supports the creation of a DVD-RAM via the IBM
    supplied applications/scripts. All documentation and
implementation aside this is IBM supports position.
If one can create a CD via this method great. If there
is a problem; tough luck IBM will not investigate or fix the problem.

    Conclusion:
AIX supports ONLY the creation of DVD-RAM using IBM FRU hardware
marketed for the specific system being utilized. NO IBM FRU
hardware and NO IBM AIX supplied application/script equals
    NO SUPPORT!

    Note:
In the install notes for AIX 7.1 I believe there is a mention that
one can read blu-ray disc. Remember no IBM FRU hardware means
NO AIX software supprot. (HINT! There is NO IBM FRU for a blu-ray
disc reader. At least I know of no such offering by IBM!)
