  • 1.  Why BIRT Reports Are Being Phased Out in Maximo Implementations - and What's Replacing Them

    Posted 25 days ago

For years, BIRT (Business Intelligence and Reporting Tools) has been the standard reporting solution in IBM Maximo, providing static reports like work order summaries, asset histories, and inventory details.

Today, as organizations demand real-time insights, AI-driven analytics, and conversational reporting, BIRT's role is diminishing. IBM is now focusing on Watsonx Assistant and Cognos Analytics, which are transforming how users access and analyze Maximo data - moving from static reports to interactive, AI-powered insights.

What are your thoughts on this transition? How ready are organizations to adopt these new capabilities?

I completely agree - BIRT was perfect for transactional, static reporting, but the shift towards real-time, contextual insights is changing the game.

What I'm seeing with many organizations is that Maximo is no longer treated as the reporting engine itself but as a data source within a larger analytics architecture. Data is often streamed or extracted into a lakehouse environment (e.g. Delta Lake, Snowflake, or BigQuery), where it's combined with IoT, ERP, or sensor data for richer analysis.

This opens the door for more advanced use cases - think predictive models running on top of historical and live data, or semantic layers that tools like Cognos, Power BI, or even LLM-based assistants can query directly.

The architectural question then becomes: do we batch-export data from Maximo (via APIs, Integration Framework, or CDC pipelines), or do we establish near real-time streams using Kafka or Event Streams to feed the lake continuously?

In my experience, a hybrid approach works best: operational dashboards close to Maximo (Cognos, Watsonx), and strategic analytics - including AI-driven insights - served from the lake.

Curious how others are designing this data layer - are you integrating Maximo into a larger lakehouse, or still keeping reporting inside the MAS ecosystem?

With the advent of AI-powered Business Intelligence and Analytics platforms such as IBM Cognos Analytics, Tableau, and TIBCO Spotfire, enterprises are fundamentally transforming how reporting is delivered. Instead of relying on product-specific reporting modules-for example, within systems like IBM Maximo, ERP, or CRM applications-organizations are now centralizing data from these siloed systems into a unified Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW).

Rather than depending on MIF-based integrations, enterprises are increasingly adopting API Connect-driven architectures to enable real-time data exchange across platforms. This allows AI-based BI tools to deliver cross-functional, predictive, and real-time insights spanning multiple enterprise systems.

This evolution ensures a single source of truth, stronger data governance, and faster, smarter decision-making, marking a decisive shift from traditional in-product reporting toward AI-driven, real-time enterprise analytics.
