    Can anyone say how to remove the present tty0 and change it to vty0. Does it require a downtime? Should it be done in Maintenance mode as the users will be using tty0 all the time?

    If you enable remote connections on the hmc and then ssh to the hmc and run vtmenu, select the system and then the lpar, do you get any output on the screen?

    Don't forget that on power5 you cannot configure the tty / vty from AIX, you can only alter the settings from the ASMI menus. If you reconfigure / change the tty settings in AIX they make no difference.

    Yes, you can do this (power5). It is not very well documented but check infocenter for commands "updlic" and "lslic".
    I have used these in our lab for concurrent updates and it will really help our remote staff since the lag time on the HMC GUI makes things take too long. Realize that the command-line won't give you progress updates like the GUI will.

    I guess your p570 FW level is incompatible with your stone age HMC level.
    Moreover: If the WebSM and HMC levels differ too much, you cannot do things like Power On/Off and Open VTerminal.

    HMC 433 control for p570 => are you serious? (absolute minimum is 4.5, we are at v6 and v7 levels)

    1. Upgrade HMC to a supported level <=> target p5 FW level
    2. PowerOff p570 (by using HMC) if you plan a FW release change

    Any thing less than HMC code level 4.5 is not supported but you need to take care with the upgrade of the HMC and the system firmware to ensure you stay within the supported levels at all times.

    Depending on the current system firmware level you may need to update the system and the HMC in a specific order. You may even need to update one, the other or both more than once.

    While on the system firmware site don't forget to update all the device microcode as well.

    I am aware that HMC FW level is of ages but cannot help much on that as we got that last month only..
    So, we will plan first for the HMC upgrade and then will go for the server FW upgrade and OS Upgrade.

    One final Question:
    1. Can we directly upgrade from HMC version 4.3 to HMC FW level 6?

    1. Note the NW settings and the IP addresses of the attached p5 systems.
    2. Do you know the admin PW of the Service Processors of the p5 systems?
    3. Get the ISO Images of the "HMC Recovery DVDs" and burn them.
    4. Boot and install from them.
    5. Re-enter the NW settings, reboot and add the p5 systems.
