This is not 100% true. If everything is virtualized, then you don't need to the HMC to create LPARs. If you need LPARs with dedicated hardware, then you need the HMC.

What is not 100% true? It is true that vio 1.2(if you install standalone) gives you the ability to manage the box with out HMC, including creating lpars. This is done through the IVM. You can still install vio 1.2 standalone partition(with out using ivm) and still use a HMC and dedicate/share hardware to lpars( i know this because i have done it). If you install vio 1.2 over top of aix 5.3, then you will be probally using a HMC and not ivm.

What I want to know is, can the vio support SDD for svc's or ds6800 etc
