If not to new level, atleast go with ML 9 (released in 2007) Also if you have old box an no warranty on it, doubt IBM will even care to send you the disk if they have it. i don't see there will be any problem if you go to 9 instead of 5.

take system backup and update to the level any problem roll it back.

Try SUMA (smitty suma). You need internet access from the server... or at leaset access to a proxy server. Try the string 5100-05, in the ML upgrade option.
