I got an upgrade to do last days, and i have to deal with some problems while upgrading p5 lpars from 5300-06-01-0722 to 5300-11-05-1036.

A preview installation tells me theres a prerequisite problem with bos.mp64 and bos.mp packages.

I'm using a TL11SP5 Full with requisites included.

Let's talk about bos.mp, in the fix pack downloaded, i only got these 2 :
    bos.mp |+ 5.3.11.1 Base Operating System Multiprocessor Runtime|
+ 5.3.11.5 Base Operating System Multiprocessor Runtime

But the upgrade process complains about the fact that the 5.3.11.0 fileset is missing.

Indeed, in the compare report in fix central ( 5.3.11.0 0943 ) there is some lines about this version :

    U820266:bos.mp:5.3.11.0:ML530011
    U820268:bos.mp64:5.3.11.0:ML530011

But the fix pack downloaded does not include them ?

I feel like i'm missing something here. Can you tell my where i'm wrong ?

    Thank you.

However, you are trying to update 5 TLs at once. With this big of a jump there will be base-level fileset updates to accomodate new hardware or features.

You should get a full base-level set of DVDs from your IBM sales team
or you can download ISO images from the IBM entitlement website if you have an account.

    Good to know indeed.

I'd like to keep this topic opened just for a few more questions.

I managed to get quickly a TL11SP2 DVD with base filesets included.

Just before the beginning of my installp / update_all process, i have this state :

    [root@U070249:/root]# lppchk -v csm.server 1.6.0.0 (not installed; requisite fileset) [root@U070249:/root]# oslevel -s 5300-06-01-0722

An install preview runs fine !

After an effective update, things seems pretty ugly.
I do not dare to reboot this lpar now because of this messages in installp log :

    installp: APPLYING software

As a result of this errors, here are the return from lppchk -v

[root@U070249:/usr/sys/inst.images]# lppchk -v lppchk: The following filesets need to be installed or corrected to bring the system to a consistent state: bos.net.tcp.client 5.3.11.0 (not installed; requisite fileset) bos.net.tcp.client 5.3.10.0 (not installed; requisite fileset) bos.net.tcp.client 5.3.7.0 (not installed; requisite fileset) bos.pmapi.lib 5.3.11.0 (BROKEN) bos.rte.libpthreads 5.3.11.1 (BROKEN) csm.server 1.7.1.0 (not installed; requisite fileset) devices.artic960.rte 5.3.11.0 (BROKEN) devices.common.IBM.sni.rte 1.2.0.12 (usr: APPLIED, root: not installed) rpm.rte 3.0.5.40 (not installed; requisite fileset)

Of course, i produced a mksysb before upgrade.

bosboot errors are quite confusing, and when i make this check to secure a reboot, here i go :

    [root@U070249:/usr/sys/inst.images]# bosboot -v 0301-154 bosboot: missing proto file: /usr/lib/libisns.a [root@U070249:/var/adm/ras]# bosboot -ad /dev/ipldevice 0301-154 bosboot: missing proto file: /usr/lib/libisns.a

If you got any ideas about what's happening, you're welcome.

I got this update on a dvd media, but i have also a 5 cd's kit. Maybe following errors about bos.rte.libpthreads are telling me that files may have been corrupted.

ar: Error 0 ar: 0707-106 Internal error

while reading the fixed header of archive file

    Thanks.

It will likely print these 3 filesets as broken.

Time to learn how to manually clean, as i wont be able to reboot this lpar.

i tried an installp with these 3 filesets, and it fails at bosboot step.

    BEGIN:Sat Mar 12 17:15:37 2011:031216153711 Command line is: /usr/sbin/installp -acNgX -e /var/adm/ras/nim.installp -f \ /tmp/.genlib.installp.list.344318-d /tmp/_nim_dir_417918/mnt0 0503-409 installp: bosboot verification starting... 0503-497 installp: An error occurred during bosboot verification processing. END:Sat Mar 12 17:15:43 2011:031216154311

bosboot fails because of the state of bos.net.tcp.client
it seems that /usr/lib/libisns.a is from this last fileset.

So, bos.net.tcp.client cannot install because prereq bos.rte.libpthreads is missing.
    And i can't update bos.rte.libpthreads because a bos.net.tcp.client file is missing.

    Weird.

So i tried to force install bos.net.tcp.client but it seems there is no way to install single fileset without their requisites.
    Dunno if it's possible.

02 and not 05, because the dvd update doesnt contain SP5 files. So SP5 is not applied yet.

Well, update process is finally ok.

these messages about problems reading header files with ar command.
it talks about local files installp cant manage to update.

ar: Error 0 ar: 0707-106 Internal error

while reading the fixed header of archive file ./usr/artic960/lib/libric.a.new.

2 of them were empty, and one was not the same size compared to another machine with same fileset level.
So i copied these files from another lpar.

I also included an exit 0 in the head of the /usr/sbin/bosboot file, in order to let the process continue given the fact that the bos.net.tcp.client was missing.

    [root@U070249:/var/adm/ras]# bosboot -v 0301-154 bosboot: missing proto file: /usr/lib/libisns.a

It did the trick. I'm a little bit worried about these empty files for an unknown reason, maybe a previous failed update or something.

As a precaution, just before the reboot, i simply made a "bosboot -ad /ipl/device" (rhdisk0 link).

    Finally.
