    Thanks in advance

Anyway, make sure you're doing an update_all and not an install.

Also, you need to check before you start to ensure all filesets are consistent and you don't have any outstanding issues.

Most of the time this is caused by people doing an install, rather than an update_all.

Yes i tried it with update_all.

How to check for the cosistency, if "instfix -i|grep ML" is the command the i've already checked with it and found everything ok till TL4. I've also uploaded output of lslpp -Lc file to IBM fixcentral and it suggestem me huge no of files which is around 6 GB + ( Shall i download it and install these before moving to TL12?

And i'm sure i've used update_all though i tried with install at first.
for your reference if lslpp -Lc output is required then i've attached it with this response. and my oslevel -s is 5300-4-CSP
    Thank you

How did you download TL12? You mentioned FixCentral recommended 6G worth of files and that could be correct since your system is so down-level.
Most likely there are some base level filesets you need since those have been updated since TL4 or there are other installed programs on your system that need updates that are not included in your download. For instance, RSCT filesets are not usually included in service packs, only the new base TL and by separate download.

GROUP REQUISITES: The dependencies of one or more of the selected filesets
listed above are defined by a group requisite. A group requisite must pass
a specified number of requisite tests. The following describe group
requisite failures for filesets that you selected. (See the "Requisite Failure Key" below for details of group member failures.)

    #1 needs:
At least 1 of the following:
    | At least 2 of the following:
    | | * xlC.aix61.rte 9.0.0.1
    | | * bos.rte 6.1.0.0
    | At least 2 of the following:
    | | ~ xlC.aix50.rte 10.1.0.3

    Requisite Failure Key:
"*" fileset is not installed and not available on the current
    installation media.
"~" fileset is available on the installation media but is not currently
installed. This fileset is failing to install because the requirements
of the group requisite, of which the fileset is a member, cannot be
met or because the fileset has requisites of its own which are causing
problems. Request this fileset for installation by itself to determine the actual reason. (Use the "Preview" option (-p flag) to prevent
    the installation from actually occurring.)

AVAILABLE REQUISITES: You specified that requisite software should be
automatically installed. The following filesets are requisites of one
or more of the selected filesets listed above. These requisites would
have been installed automatically had the selected filesets passed all
    requisite checks.

    parentheses.)

Not running bffcreate after copying the TL12 files to the system and re-running the smitty update_all meant that I found myself successfully at TL12.

My favorite command for doing this is 'instfix -ciqk 5300-12_AIX_ML | grep ":-:"'

Any fileset with a "-" is not up to date.
You can also use with oslevel command.
"oslevel -qr" will give you a list of levels
"oslevel -r -l <yourlevel>" should show you what is missing.
