Unable to setup FTP access to RDz UT

  • 1.  Unable to setup FTP access to RDz UT

    Posted Thu July 07, 2011 11:44 AM
    Hi

I'm new to RDz UT. I want to be able to transfer files from my PC to the mainframe emulator preferably through FTP.

Can someone please help me on how to implement this?

    Thanks

First, do you have TCPIP set up yet? If not, that is the first step. If you are setting up the system so you can connect with RDz, you'll need to ensure you've got scenario 4 in the zPDT volume 2 manual done. Those steps are detailed in the link: RDz UT Configuration Guide

Once you have that setup, and confirmed basic TCPIP, you should be able to FTP to your z/OS.

    Hi

I have started with Scenario 4. I've added the following lines to my Devmap:

[manager] name awsosa 0024 --path=A0 --pathtype=OSD --tunnel_intf=y device 401 osa osa device 402 osa osa device 403 osa osa [manager] name awsosa 0022 --path=F0 --pathtype=OSD device 404 osa osa device 405 osa osa device 406 osa osa

Now when I give the awsstart command to start the mainframe, it does not start and the start up process is terminated with the following messages:

ibmsys1@rc-mainframe:/usr/z1090/bin> awsstart aprof12 IBM System z Personal Development Tool (zPDT) Licensed Materials - Property of IBM 5799-ADE (C) Copyright IBM Corp. 2007 All Rights Reserved. z1090, version 1-2.41.23.01, build date - 09/20/10 for Linux on SuSE 64bit AWSSTA014I Map file name specified: aprof12 AWSRAS181I 0 Snapdump incident(s), RAS trace and RAS log files occupy 303637 bytes in /home/ibmsys1/z1090/logs AWSRAS182I Associated files, logs and core files occupy 3360 bytes in /home/ibmsys1/z1090/logs AWSSTA204I zPDT started in directory '/usr/z1090/bin'. Can you please help me with the Permission denied error? What could I be doing wrong here.

    Thanks for your help.

This is an install issue. Make sure you have all of the z1090 files at directory /usr/z1090 installed and owned by root:root. All of your system z volumes as well as your devmap should be owned by the user and group used to start the emulator and ipl the system. Also make sure the z1090instcheck command completes with no errors.

Thanks for the tip! It was indeed an ownership issue. I've given the ownership of the z1090 and its sub directories to ibmsys1 and now I'm able to start the mainframe emulator without errors.

Now having done this, I need to complete two more steps:

    1. Make changes in the z/OS VTAMLST
    2. Make changes in z/OS TCP/IP Profile

Can you please guide me in completing the above two steps?

Thanks very much for your help.

Refer to networking scenario 4 in Redbook SG247722. Many have used these instructions to complete the network setup.

Yes, I understand, but I'm having difficulty as in where to place these instructions in the vtamlst and z/OS TCP/IP profile.

Actually I'm new to System Z altogether therefore, I'm having a little difficulty in understanding the vtamlst and the TCP/IP steps.

Can you please guide me how to perform these two steps?

    Thanks

There is another book you need. Its the Link:RDz UT config guide. It goes into much more detail.

You'll setup the VTAMLST and TCPPARMS and another TCP profile PDS. These are in the document listed above, and is for the most part step by step.

I ran into the same issues, and then someone recommended this guide, and then I was running (mostly). Remember, when editing or copying your datasets (i.e. from ADCD.Z111S.TCPPARMS to USER.TCPPARMS), you'll need to put the new dataset name in single quotes (i.e. 'USER.TCPPARMS'). I lost 2 days until I figured that one out. Otherwise it will copy the dataset to IBMUSER.USER.TCPPARMS (prefixing your high level qualifier).

I tried to configure TCP/IP and FTP but somehow its just not working. I've checked everything. There's this dataset member which did not exist on my RDzUT, therefore, I created it. Could this be the problem? The dataset member is called USER.PARMLIB(BPXPRMDB).

I tried to transfer files through the IBM Personal Communications workstation emulator and was able to transfer most of my required files with success except for two.
I have 6 binary files out of which I was able to transfer 5 files to mainframe. The 6th file is a big file (300+ MB) and gets stuck at 98% while getting transferred.

The 7th file is a SMPMCS file which is not getting transferred at all. It gives an error of invalid option selection when I try to transfer it. What mode am I supposed to select while transferring SMPMCS files? Binary, text or append?

Please help as I need to transfer these RTCz installation files to the mainframe so that I can proceed with the installation.

    Many thanks for your support,

That file is likely not related to your problem. Where are you with TCPIP setup? What have you changed in your setup from that which was shipped to you? Can you connect to your RDzUT z/OS machine from another workstation on your network?

Have you pre-allocated datasets on the host for the datasets you are trying to transfer? If not, you've likely not gotten what you think you have and the datasets likely won't be usable by SMPE. Are you following instructions in the program directory to transfer the files to your host?

Regarding the TCP/IP setup, I've checked most of the things and they seem alright. I don't know why I'm unable to ping or FTP to my z/OS. I can show you the problem via Webex if you want.

I can't proceed further with anything before I get the TCP/IP running smoothly.

    Please help.

Does the TCPIP proc start with no errors including the OSA adapter? Have you tried hometest from TSO option 6? What is the result? Can you ping the z/OS machine from your workstation? Can you ping the workstation from the z/OS machine?

You have at least two errors here. The first is that your OSA adapter did not start correctly on the z/OS machine. You can tell this by message EZZ4308I ERROR: CODE=80103016 DURING ACTIVATION OF
DEVICE PORTA. DIAGNOSTIC CODE: 02 . The message books say this is most likely caused by a VTAM TRLE that has not been specified correctly. The second problem is that your DNS cannot resolve your hostname - ADCD. Hometest tells you that. This can be caused by an incorrect NSINTERADDR value in the TCPIP.DATA dataset and/or a missing hostname in the hosts file. Please review these configurations. I also suggest you follow all of the configuration instructions in publication SC14-7281-1.

Thanks, I was able to solve the TCP/IP issue with the help of an IBM PMR.

Now getting back to the file transfer problem, I am able to FTP to z/OS but I'm not able to transfer a '.tar' file from my Windows machine to the z/OS UNIX SS. When I try to put my .tar file in the UNIX directory, I receive the following error message:

'Invalid data set name "src-bfagent-7.1.2.0-0-0016.tar". Use MVS
    Dsname conv '

It's expecting an MVS data set, but I have a .tar file that contains the installation kit for one of IBM's tools which can only be installed using the z/OS UNIX SS. Can you please guide me how can I achieve this?

    Thanks

    Hi Juzer,

Just judging by the message I would hazard a guess that you need to specify the destination file correctly. If you are transferring a file from your PC to the zOS you might do something like this:

    ftp> put C:\pcdir0\src-bfagent-7.1.2.0-0-0016.tar /ussdir1/ussdir2/bfagent.tar
