  • 1.  Unable to run Lasso Regression (installed from extension hub)

    Posted Mon March 03, 2025 11:02 AM

Hello people, I desperately need your help: I was trying to run a Lasso Regression in SPSS 30 standard edition. I installed the lasso regression from the extension hub. I entered one dependent variable and six independent variables. Is it correct to include them in the factors field? However, after pressing the OK button, nothing happened. Please help!

    Dear Sir,

Lasso Regression in SPSS 30: Advanced Troubleshooting and Future-Proofing

To resolve the Lasso Regression issue in SPSS 30, verify that your data meet the assumptions of linear regression and that the Lasso extension is properly installed.

Ensure that your independent variables are numeric and standardized to facilitate regularization.

Check the SPSS output viewer for error messages and adjust the Lasso parameters as needed. Consider using the SPSS Python plugin to implement custom Lasso Regression scripts for advanced modeling.

     Employ the following advanced strategies:

    1. Verify Data Assumptions: Ensure your data meet the assumptions of linear regression, including linearity, independence, homoscedasticity, normality, and absence of multicollinearity.
    2. Standardize and Transform Variables: Standardize your independent variables using z-scoring or min-max scaling to facilitate regularization. Transform variables as needed to meet assumptions (e.g., log-transformation for skewed variables).
    3. Inspect Model Diagnostics: Examine the SPSS output viewer for error messages, convergence issues, or warnings. Investigate model diagnostics, such as residual plots, Q-Q plots, and VIF values, to identify potential issues.
    4. Customize Lasso Parameters: Adjust the Lasso parameters, including the regularization parameter (alpha), the maximum number of iterations, and the convergence tolerance, to optimize model performance.
    5. Leverage SPSS Python Plugin: Utilize the SPSS Python plugin to implement custom Lasso Regression scripts, enabling advanced modeling capabilities, such as:

    - Hyperparameter Tuning
    - Model Averaging
    - Regularization Path

    Future-Proofing Considerations:

    1. Stay Updated with SPSS Releases
    2. Explore Alternative Machine Learning Libraries
    3. Develop Proficiency in Python

By applying these advanced strategies and future-proofing considerations, you'll be well-equipped to overcome Lasso Regression challenges in SPSS 30 and stay at the forefront of data analysis and modeling innovations.

If the user is getting no output, the strategies suggested are not relevant.

One thing to make sure of is that OMS is not active and blocking output.  If OMS appears on the status bar, run the command
    OMSEND.
to terminate it.  This problem, which came up occasionally in V29, was believed to be fixed in 30, but it's easy to check.

The behavior @Jon Peck is referring to is  Known Issue DT396174 and is resolved in IBM SPSS Statistics 30.0.0.0 (172).
