  • 1.  syslog-ng for AIX

    Posted Wed March 02, 2022 09:53 AM
    Dear Team, dear community,

I would like to know if syslog-ng is a topic for the AIX Toolbox...

We are using a centralized log management and sometimes it is not easy to the the information out of the log file.
The text format is different for each log file and not easy to translate to a standard.

Is anyone already using syslog-ng? What is the experience?
Would other like to try it out?

And last but not least: Is it possible to build it for AIX Toolbox?
I saw it at perzl, but I don£t want to mix different respositories.

Thanks in advance for your opinion...

    best regards,
    Joerg

I have successfully forwarded AIX's default syslog to a syslog-ng
server in the past. No problem, no new packages required.

Update your /etc/syslog.conf with facility and levels, @server.

There are only older versions of Syslog-NG OSE, ported to AIX. I didn't see any newer versions. OneIdentity sells Syslog-NG PE for AIX, but I don't know how long will it be supported. On the other side you have rsyslog in AIX Web Download Pack, which has the same capabilities and used in many modern Linux distributions, such as Red Hat.

Thank you @Russell Adams and @Andrey Klyachkin
Right now there is no plan to look into syslog-ng from AIX toolbox and rsyslog is supported preferred way.

It is users choice and their requirement.

rsyslog is shipped with AIX expansion pack so one can install directly and it is supported thru AIX support process.

syslog-ng is from AIX toolbox so you need dnf setup and AIX toolbox environment. syslog-ng is AIX toolbox t&c.

    Thanks,
