  • 1.  STATS EARTH (MARS) for SPSS – “R earth package could not be loaded” error

    Posted 2 days ago

    Hello to all!

I'm trying to use the STATS EARTH (MARS) extension in SPSS Statistics, but the procedure fails to run and returns the following error:

Error: The R earth package is required but could not be loaded.

    Error in Run(list("STATS EARTH", list(` ` = list(list(ESTIMATE = list("YES")),  :

      could not find function "Run"

    Environment details:

    • SPSS Statistics version: 31.0.1.
    • Operating system:  Windows 11.
    • R version/setup: default R version and plugins provided with Stats version 31.0.1.

From the message, it looks like the earth package is either not being found or not being loaded correctly, and the second line suggests that the procedure's wrapper function isn't being recognized.

Could anyone advise on the correct way to get the MARS (STATS EARTH) bundle working under this setup, or let me know if there is an updated version of the extension (or installation steps) that I should be using?

Many thanks in advance for your help,
    Meni Berger

I noticed that in 31.0.1.0,, at least on my system, the dialog now prompts you to install STATS EARTH from the Extension Hub even if it was already installed.  Please try that if you haven't instgalled the update

Next, try running this code to see if you get a more informative error message.  You can ignore the "built under" warnings.
    begin program r.
    library(earth)
    end program.

And one more thing to try
    in a command window, run
    echo %appdat%
    On my system, that shows
    C:\Users\jkpec\AppData\Roaming
    Then run
    begin program r.
    source("c:/Users/jkpec/AppData/Roaming/IBM/SPSS Statistics/one/extensions/STATS_EARTH.R")
    end program.
1changing the first part to match your appdata output.  If that code is correct, you will get no output, but if there is an error, the message will appear, which would help to diagnose the problem.
Be sure to use / in the path, not  \

    Thanks Kim.

@Meni Berger, there needs to be a small correction to what Kim typed above (a typo). Instead of `echo %appdat%`, it should be `echo %appdata%`.

    Best,

    Curtis

    • Compliment someone's eyes when you first meet, by doing so you're going to force the person to look at your eyes a brief moment, but it would be enough for that person to notice you, when before it could have been a polite gesture.
    • Still, in the first impression moments, use the first name of the person straight away, by doing so you're connected with more intimacy.
    • And when talking with that new person, ask a question and stay silent until you have a full answer, people really can't stand the noiseless gap and will talk much more than what they intended.
