  • 1.  SPSS crashes immediately after launching (macOS Sonoma, 29.0.1.1 + Fix) #SPSS Statistics

    Posted Wed January 03, 2024 06:02 PM

    Hi all,

I'm experiencing an error under macOS Sonoma. I've re-installed 29.0.1.1 and swapped the lib file from the fix. When starting SPSS I can access the license wizard (using a license server) which returns no errors (see attached) but then starting SPSS again results in a bouncing app icon before it vanishes without opening. Trying to open it via Terminal (Contents/macOS/stats) results in an 'abort error' (see attached).

How can this be fixed, is there anything else I can provide that would help?

    Hi @Marc Lamhofer

You indicate you are on Statistics 29.0.1.1 My first thought is for you to update to 29.0.2.0 and see if you can still replicate this issue.

    To be ultra-conservative, I suggest:

    Hi David,

thanks for getting back to me. I'll reach out to the tech department of my university regarding 29.0.2.0 and let you know if your suggestions have worked out.

    Hi David,

I just had a chance to install 29.0.2.0 and I'm happy to report that the initial error is now gone and I can open SPSS again. However, it appears that SPSS is running quite buggy now, sometimes not responding or quitting unexpectedly but at least it's running again.

    Hi @Marc Lamhofer,

I'm sorry you are still having trouble.

    • Did you do both the clean uninstall and install 29.0.2.0, or just install 29.0.2.0 over the top of 29.0.1.1 plus interim fixes?  I'm wondering about the chance you have old files or perhaps wrong permissions somewhere in your existing install.  That's why I suggested a complete removal of SPSS Statistics followed by installing 29.0.2.0
    • The not responding or quitting can be many things.  Could you be more specific?  If I were going to replicate this behavior exactly, what would I be doing in the OS and in the product?

One thing to check: Use the Activity Monitor.app (/Applications/Utilities/Activity Monitor.app) and search for everything "spss"

You should  only see these three processes.  If you see more, then that  would mean some are 'orphaned'  and you'd need to figure out why they became that way.
    • Exit Statistics normally and check to see if there are any proceses left over and kill them.
    • Launch Statistics and perform your replications scenario.  Do you see the same behavior?

I appreciate your reply and suggestions, David.

I did a clean uninstall of 29.0.1.1 before updating. In the Activity Monitor I only saw the three processes, nothing else. I'm having no issues while working in SPSS, it only seems to be somewhat temperamental when launching.

After asking the IT-department of my university it might be connected to accessing the license server the university uses. Most likely this seems to be a temporary occurrence. I'll keep an eye on the Activity Monitor in the following days just to be sure.

    Thanks again
