  • 1.  So, is licensing required or not for 5770-XW1?

    Posted Wed October 18, 2023 12:42 PM

    Some people were anxious to try Advanced Job Scheduler and/or other products which are no longer required to need a license, if you ordered a certain PTF (depending on your release level).

    However, they are complaining that it removed the license for 5770-XW1 (which apparently is documented that it would).  However they are saying no one told the newer iACS nor the older Client Access and they are not connecting because the system isn't licensed.  I'm trying to convince the parties involved to open a case.  How is this going to be resolved?  A new version of iACS?

    Dear Robert

    From my faint memory of past experience, in a new IBM i server in which XW1 does not yet have its licensed key entered, I can still start a 5250 session and get a small dialog box saying something about XW1 license key missing but if I click OK rather than Cancel, I will get the 5250 session connected. I believe this should have to do with 70-day grace period coded in the license manager.   The question here is whether you can see the 70-day grace period count down message (CPI9E75 ?) in QSYSOPR or not?  If so, you should still be able to establish the session and then wait and see what will happen within 70 days from IBM to address this issue.

    I just found more information here :  IBM continues to simplify the IBM i portfolio: Licensed software withdrawal of selected IBM i LPPs and IBM i optional features at  https://www.ibm.com/docs/en/announcements/continues-simplify-i-portfolio-licensed-software-withdrawal-selected-i-lpps-i-optional-features.  There is this statement : The IBM i (5770-SS1) PTFs which remove the license checking function will be available on October 13, 2023  which should mean that you should be able to use the SW products without any issue because "license checking" functionality will stop working which is different from "removed the license for ...." that you said in  your post.

    I hope this information eliminates your expressed concern.

    Satid,

    They were having no problems.  Then they put the PTF on listed in your last post.  That PTF removed the license.  That is when the problem started.

    At my request IBM updated the iACS website:

    <snip>

    Hi Rob,

    Thank you for taking the time to point out the discrepancy with IBM i Access - Client Solutions.

    We have made the following change and republished the page:
    "Beginning with version 1.1.9.1 an  IBM i Access Family license is no longer required to use  the 5250 emulation and Data Transfer features."

    Thanks,
    IBM i Access Client Solutions Team

    </snip>

    I am hoping they are running an older version of iACS and that is what the issue is.  I am waiting to hear.
