Will the import recreate the VG and filesystems and mount them or do I need to save the VG off to tape with savevg and restore it from tape then?

Yes. This is the proper procedure. Of course a savevg backup is not a bad idea just in case. Another good idea is to check paths to the disks in the SAN before actually importing the VG, i have seen problems when one path is down. Another good idea could be once you have exported the VG on the source system you can use the lquerypv command in order to check for some internal areas in the LUN to check that the VGID is there.

    Hope this helps
