It all looks a bit "scrapy" .

Does anyone have a link to some usefull documentation on what to do after "install" on AIX before I start "hacking" :@) .

Here is a little documentation that may help.

    http://www-128.ibm.com/developerworks/aix/library/au-unixothers/

I don't see the problem with the directory structure. If you want the /usr/local structure put in the equivalent links.

Another thing that you may be able to use is the SMBFS client (part of AIX)

bos.cifs_fs.rte 5.3.0.30 COMMITTED Runtime for SMBFS
bos.cifs_fs.smit 5.3.0.0 COMMITTED SMIT Interface for SMBFS

    http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/SG247463.html

Section 7.12 on page 319 includes the text:
To install SMBFS on an AIX system, install the bos.cifs_fs package
from AIX install CD-ROMs (Example 7-18). When the bos.cifs_fs package
in installed, the device nsmb0 is created. This device allows
the mount command to establish a connection between the SMB server and
    the client.

I think scrapy is a little hard - just different.
Even Linux suffers with "standard" places to put stuff that are different - it would be nice if Red Hat and SUSE were most consistent :-)

Anyway, it should all work as normal.

I am used to HP-UX Samba installs which put everything in the correct place and all I need to do is edit smb.conf and restart the daemon, but as far as I can see I have no means to stop or restart Samba in this install ? smbd -D does'nt seem to do anything ?

Earlier documentation in this thread seems to refer to /etc/samba but this did not get created on either of the two servers I performed the install on.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    rpm -qlp <rpm-file-name>

Thanks - I have run that against the three samba install RPMS on the AIX Linux (??) DVD and got the same list I found above.

This just seems incomplete - If I look at the doucmentation directories it says to run some makes and a ./configure in the source directory but this just seems to be the default SAMBA docs ?

I need to know the next step to take from the point where the RPMS have been "installed".

The smb.conf file goes in /usr/local/samba/lib/smb.conf

    After Installing SAMBA

Add the following to the /etc/inetd.conf:

swat stream tcp nowait.400 root /usr/local/samba/sbin/swat swat

Add the following to the /etc/inittab:

    smbd:2:once:/usr/local/samba/sbin/smbd > /dev/console 2>&1
    nmbd:2:once:/usr/local/samba/sbin/nmbd > /dev/console 2>&1

    Add the following to /etc/services:

swat 901/tcp # Samba Web Administration tool

IF THE 901 PORT IS IN USE, SELECT ANOTHER PORT < 1024.

Run the smbpasswd command to add userid and password matching your windows logon.

    On Windows:

    Test the installation:

    Start => Run => \[hostname]

You will get a window containing the shares defined in the smb.conf file.

    Test SWAT:

    In a Web Browser: http://hostname:901

The issue seems to be that the SAMBA install at the point the three RPMS are run is not correct and none of the binary files are going anywhere useful that I can see.

I don't get a /usr/local/samba directory, I get nothing in /etc/init.d and even if I had to run the standard "configure" command for Samba I get no source directory anyway !!

    HELP !! (Please).
