RHEL NIC names, devmaps and TCPIP

  • 1.  RHEL NIC names, devmaps and TCPIP

    Hi

Our RHEL licenses forced us to upgrade RHEL to 7.6. This changed our NIC name from eth1 to ens192.

RHEL documentation states that after updating to RHEL 7.3, NIC names have changed from dynamically generated names to names like ens192. This was presumably done to avoid very long, generated NIC names.

It seems to us that this name is not recognized by create_devmaps, so we had to force the name back to eth1 in Linux.

Now we have a working devmap, but we still have trouble with a stable TCPIP connections to z/OS, where FTP and IDZ will not connect, and TN3270 drops off after a couple of minutes with a console message of IKT100I, unconditional logoff, abend 622.

Could this RHEL change also be the cause of our stability problem?

The issue was caused by confusing the two MAC addresses in the system: The one for the Linux system and the one for the Ethernet connection to z/OS.
