    not sure with AIX 5.3. But this is what i done with 4.3 and 5.1.

    You have to boot the AIX OSCD and choose option 3 (start maintenance mode for sys recovery.
    Then choose to access root volume group. Select 'access this volume group and start a shell'. You will get # prompt.

    Now, change you password.
    1. passwd

    After that, reboot the server.
    1. reboot

    It should do it.
