I have a rack 9115-505 at a server hosting place and need an emergency access to "console" as if I were there, plugged into the serial port with a terminal. The hosting provider initially promised this but they have no other RS/6000 and do not know how|if to connect.

I have the ASM working over ethernet but that is not what I need. I there a way of accessing the server's console interface over the net?

    some solutions:

    • connect a second machine via serial cable to the 505 and use a terminal program
    • buy or make the provider buy a specialized console server (cyclades by avocent.com is quite common)
    • buy an HMC

Yes, that is what I do when I am physically at the server

These are too expensive solutions. I was hoping for something like a router with a serial connection to the server

There might exist also straight serial to lan converter.

i know but the linux box is working also as NIMOL server so one server less in a rack and i have to pay for HE.
In case i would have to support more servers i would of course go for a Terminal server but the OP statet that they have only one server.

    @OP
Ask your hosting provider if they provide remote serial access via net or telefon. Afaik most of them do. grukrz1 already pointed out the physical parameter.
    cheers

did you try these settings on your pc?

    • 19200 bits per second
    – 8 data bits
    – No parity
    – 1 stop bit
    – Xon/Xoff flow control
btw. maybe when the system was previously managed by HMC (and was partitioned) is should be somehow reset to forgot HMC??

I also remember that ASCI terminal for ASMI was only available when the system was in the standby state and was not available during run time. Maybe it is somehow linked to an LPAR console?

Maybe chapter 2.1 would be helpful for you (be careful): http://www.redbooks.ibm.com/redpapers/pdfs/redp4061.pdf

    1) I do not have HMC
    2) I do have Advanced System Management (Access over https works)

All I really want to do is to be able to login the system console over the Internet in cases where the AIX has problems starting multiuser.
