    5.3 should be good. You can always build on 6.1 later (Thats just my opinion). Besides I do not think the certification has been upgraded to 6.1 yet.

    Yes a server and cd set for a start

    IBM redbooks and Infocenters are good.

    This should give you an idea of what you need to know and you can decide on how much time you need to dedicate.

    The complete AIX cd set. 5.3 has 8 bos cds plus expansion pack which has IHS plus update cds for TLs and optionally the linux toolkit (not to mention mozilla but that can be always downloaded).

    Most of the ppl learning for the first time start out with just the two cds (with just the base ML) and then realize they need the rest while configuring additional devices, while learning performance tools or websm configuration for remote access.

    This is just my opinion as to what arsenal a newbie to AIX should possess.
