  • 1.  RD&T scratch tape handling ? x

    Posted Thu December 17, 2015 11:07 AM

Has anyone successfully configured a scratch tape pool on RDT?  If so, what tool did you use, CA1, etc ?  Looking for advice and alternatives to manage a tape scratch pool on RDT.

    Thanks, Spencer

I checked with a zPDT/RD&T expert. This was his response.

Are they interested in "real" tape library (using SCSI tape drives) or an emulated library of awstape volumes? Regardless, the base zPDT technology nothing to offer. In general, tape scratch pool automation is, in a sense, an application --- typical of production operations, not development operations. There has been interest from customers in an emulated (or SCSI)  automatic tape library system, similar to the tape libraries that IBM sells. However, this is not on the roadmap.

    Spencer,

Something else to consider - for emulated Tape, zPDT treats them identical to emulated DASD.  If creating emulated devices, as stated earlier, there really is no advantage with TAPE over DASD.

    Dear All,

Can you let me know how to create a AWSTAPE volume in Linux for RD&T.

I am able to create a tape file(eg. TEST01.awstape), but I need to create a tape volume to mount on the drive in the DEVMAP.

    Can anyone pls guide.

    Thanks

    Spencer,

RD&T comes with RMM, so you'd have to set it up, and then define your tapes.  I assume you have the Fujitsu or some other SCSI-attached tape drive?  I have done this successfully on a P390 with the z/OS V1R4 ADCD.  That's on my list of things to do for my RD&T system, but I have to get a PCIe SCSI card first.  I have the Fujitsu M2488E.

    Dear Tom,

Thanks for your reply, but my question was how to create a emulated tape in the Linux. For eg:

"$ scsi2tape /dev/st0 /z/my/TAPE23" how to create this TAPE23. Is there any command used to create that tape entry in Linux?
