  • 1.  RD&T 9.5 upgrade and licenses

    Posted Thu September 20, 2018 08:08 AM

As mentioned in another thread, we have a RD&T 9.5 hardware token based system and cannot get a license past November 2018 for it as I suspect that they are no longer supported for this environment. Presumably we now have to upgrade this system to ZD&T with RVU licensing and Enterprise Edition as it has more than one user?

    Some other questions:

    • If we have to move licensing away from the hardware token then we must have a software license server, correct? Why is not not possible to continue with a hardware token?
    • This environment also has access to a Rational License Key Server and I know that if we have to run a ZD&T software license server then it has to be another server, what I would like to know is:
      • Can the ZD&T software license server also run on the RLKS is the OS is Ubuntu or RHEL?
      • What does the RLKS do exactly? I cannot understand why you need to have 2 license servers accessed by ZD&T, surely if you have the tokens applied to RLKS and point your ZD&T instance to it, that should determine if you have a license or not? This just adds an extra server and further points of failure
    • Presumably GEN-1 hardware tokens are no longer available for ZD&T, what about GEN-2?
    • In the documentation regarding the different license servers, hardware and software, there is some information about a hardware license server. If hardware tokens are presumably no longer available for ZD&T, is there any point in having this anymore?

    Thanks,

Depending on what you were licensed for, this likely may translate to licenses for ZD&T Personal Edition.  RVU and Enterprise Editions are really add ons to this as far as software goes. You do NOT have to move to software based licenses. I have a zD&T v12 box with a USB hardware key.

RLKS, or Rational License Key server is a software product that handles multiple software product license types for IBM. Most shops put the RLKS on its own VM. The OS needs to be either RHEL or Suse (althought I've installed it on OpenSuse before).

After speaking with Bryan we were able to sort this problem out. Just to clarify, many RD&T licenses such as the ones we have allow multiple users of the system which means that the Personal Edition is out of the question, along with the AUSS (Authorized User Single Session) which comes with EE. Nearly all of our licenses require multiple users which means EE which in turn means that a separate software license server is also required. This we have done and is up and running.
