    Mike,

Yes, RBD 9.5 is electronic only.   We did not have enough customers who required physical media.

I have a somewhat related question on this topic.  Did IBM release an updated version of the Data Studio product that came with the previous version of RBD?  If not then I presume that when I install RBD 9.5 I'll need to reinstall Data Studio.  Is that correct?

    Mike,

    The answer is it depends.

Are you installing Data Studio and RBD in the same software package or not when installing via Installation Manager?

If installed together, you will need to upgrade Data Studio.  If installed separately, then you could continue with the version you have.

See the following link.   It shows what product levels run together for the various IDE (development environments), Rational Team Concert, and others.

Let me know if this does not answer the question.

Not unexpectedly, the bell has tolled for JSF. Unfortunately, that means that the bell tolls for RBD for us.

    Tuukka,

Thanks for reposting the Blog entry for others.

On the removal of JSF, as you said, it was an anticipated item since we had deprecated it in RBD 9.0.   We were dependent on the JSF Widget Library from RAD and it was removed from support by RAD.

    Two comments:

a.)  RBD 9.1 will be in support until at least Sept. 2019 so you will have JSF support for at least 4 more years.

b.) I would assume the business/data logic in EGL is still of some value and it might be possible/valuable to reuse this with any other UI (through services) which could possibly include EGL RUI.

    Hi Mark,

JWL has been hopelessly outdated for a long time (supported browsers are IE6-8 and Firefox 2-4). We stopped using JWL widgets long time ago and we have successfully integrated jQuery into ouf JSF-applications. For us JWL is disposable, but JSF level being stuck at 1.1 in RBD is a blocker. Rational Application Developer supports JSF 2.2, from business point of view I fully understand that supporting both RichUI and JSF in RBD was no longer feasible.

We still have iSeries as our backend system and we need to integrate with iSeries programs. RBD has made that part easy - we have also tried writing PCML and calling iSeries programs directly from Java and that is not fun.

Okay, so am I reading this right?  When it says "All JSF related parts and support and will be marked in error within the source."  Does this mean that JSF application won't work in RBD 9.5?

  • 12.  Re: RBD 9.5 is available

    Posted Fri September 25, 2015 05:17 PM

    Mike,

that is correct.  We announced the deprecation of the JSF support in RBD 9.0 due to the JWL deprecation in RAD, the resources it would take to support later JSF levels, and the strategic direction of the RUI support.  In RBD 9.1, you would have gotten a deprecation warning on the usage JSF related syntax.

Given the removal of the JWL support in RAD 9.5 (which EGL was dependent on), we had to remove the support in RBD 9.5.

So, yes you are reading it correctly.

For now, you will have to continue to use RBD 9.1.1 or below until you can replace the JSF pages with RUI.

    Mike,

RBD 9.1 shipped in May, 2014.  Given our standard 5 year minimum lifecycle for support, it will be in support until at least Sept. 2019.  So, you will have JSF support for at least 4 more years.   We could choose to support this release even longer but we will make that decision later.   We also usually provide fee based "extended" support after general support has ended.   Finally, we always provide at least 12 months notice via announcements before we take a product out of support.

Yes...we will continue to provide fixpacks for 9.1.1.   The frequency will be based on how many fixes need to be shipped.

I was able to download 9.5, but when I try to download the dojo examples from this link http://www-01.ibm.com/support/knowledgecenter/SSMQ79_9.5.0/com.ibm.egl.ruipreviews.sample.doc/topics/egl_ruipreviews_sample_setup.html I get a java scripting error. Is there another place to get the example?

    Hi,

you could find the samples in your IMShared\plugins folder.

This is the name of the dojo sample package: com.ibm.egl.rui.dojo.samples_2.3.0

    Hi Mark,

I have installed 9.5 and when I checked out my existing workspace/code, All the EGL file had error(As u said it was deprecated from9.1), To know new syntax I created new JSP file and when I tried to see none of the handle were created.

From your above post it seems EGL cant be used with JSF? If it can be then how ?

JSF support has been removed from RBD 9.5 and above. The preferred technique is to use RUI instead.

If JSF is required, then version 9.1.1 and any updates to that version will continue to support JSF, although a warning message will be displayed indicating that JSF is deprecated.

You should be able to download the images from Passport Advantage using your passport advantage credentials.

We just migrated our VisualAge programs to RBD 9.1.1 - will this still be supported in RBD 9.5?

VAG programs will always be able to be migrated to any RBD version. Also, code in RBD 9.1.1 is supported by 9.5, with the exception of the JSF code that was deprecated.

    Hi,

JSPs used with Web Transactions (migrated from VAGen) are still supported in RBD 9.5 as these do not use a JSF infrastructure.

I'm a little confused on something.  I've installed RDi 9.5, but for the life of me I can't figure out how to install RBD 9.5.  Here is the install Launchpad I see.  What am I missing?

    Mike,

RBD is a separate install from RDi, so that is why you don't see it on the RDi Launchpad.

Assuming your license is for the RDi RPG+COBOL EGL Edition, you have to also download the RBD install images.   Then you go through the RBD install and install into the same software development platform you used for RDi.

    take care.

When I go through passport advantage this is what I see (see below).  I downloaded all the disk images shown.  Is RBD on the second disk image?

I also have a question about Data Studio.  Can I only run one version of Data Studio on my PC?  I will need to keep RBD 9.1 up and running to support my legacy EGL JSF applications, but I would also like to be able to install the latest version of Data Studio.  When I attempt to install Data Studio it tells me I already have an earlier version installed.

Okay, I think I see where I went wrong.  Passport Advantage asks you what operating system you are using.  I instinctively chose IBM i, but what I should have chosen was Windows.  When I select Windows it gives me the links to download RBD.
