I think you should check to ensure that your backup software is supported at 5.3 and if it does, it shouldn't have any issue. Of course, you would still want to have a 5.2 mksysb, a full Oracle offline backup, and anything important that you need to preserved at 5.2 prior to the backup. Ideally, you should test a restore at 5.2 prior to upgrading to 5.3 but there are so much you can do the verify and it all depends on how mission critical your system is.
