  • 1.  PowerVC 2.1 upgrade / Exact steps ?

    Posted Wed December 28, 2022 08:19 AM
    Hello team!

Thanks for the latest PowerVC release!

I am planning to update it on my Development env; but bit uncertain regarding the needed steps.

My current env is RHEL 8.4 (ppc64le) + PowerVC 2.0.3 (+ inc all iFixes); on single node setup.

I see that latest 2.1 PowerVC is supported only on RHEL8.6 (or RHEL 9.0).

I do not want to create new VM, but use the existing one, so what are exact steps to get on the supported level:

    Stop PVC 2.0.3 services
do yum update to get my RHEL to RHEL 8.6
    Reboot
Start PVC 2.0.3 services + check that all services OK
Run offline update of PowerVC : powervc-opsmgr update -o -c powervc-dev ? # Or should powervc-services stop be run before this is launched?

    << Something like this?

    Hello Tommi,

According to the documentation, there are two possibilities.

    I have tried backup/restore.

Unfortunately it did not work with an upgrade or reinstallation to RHEL 9.0. Case is open for it.

    I would do PowerVC backup.
RHEL update from 8.4 to 8.6.
    Installation of PowerVC 2.1.
    Restore from backup.

    Greetings
    Andre

    Hi Andre!

    Thanks for the comments!

For my case (want to keep existing VM & not to create new one on RHEL9; the "Legacy method" = Backup / Restore would be the only option; so after hearing this; I think I will. wait for a while before. trying out.. :)

    If you remember, pls post here any news from the support case when U succeed on the 2.1 upgrade;

    Thanks

    Br,
    tommi

    Hello Tommi,

It was a problem with attachments. Now the install went through under RHEL 9.0.

It appears python3-rtslib-fb in rhel repo is having higher version, so please remove only this package and re-run the install again.

    Greetings
    Andre

    Hello,

    does not sound so good.
After the successful installation, the restore worked successfully. I hope that your problem will be solved as well.

    Greetings
    Andre

    Hi

In December I had a window to try online update and offline update... but both of them crashed. The online update crashed because of PowerVC itself.

It could be that my offline update could have worked if I had not updated to RHEL 8.7 before doing the update but I was out of time to try again one more time. But definitely PowerVC upgrade did not like the fact that it was a RHEL 8.7 instead of 8.6.

So this week, I did it differently, building a new LPAR and doing a backup/restore making sure I stayed on RHEL 8.6 and it worked.

Feels like IBM needs the to update the installer for 2.1.0 to support 8.7.. I had to downgrade to 8.6 to get it installed. RHEL 8.7 been out since November 9th...
