  • 1.  Patching CPLEX Studio 12.6 (Linux)

    Posted Tue August 26, 2014 02:50 PM

I have just installed CPLEX Studio 12.6, academic edition, on a Linux system, where I have user privileges (only). There is still no installer for 12.6.0.1, so I have to install 12.6.0 and then run the fix pack (which, oddly, is a larger download than the installer is).

The problem is that the default installation directory, /opt/ibm/ILOG/CPLEX_12.6, is not available to me since I do not have root privileges. I successfully installed CPLEX Studio under my home directory. The instructions for the fix pack say that it will look in the default location and, if It doesn't find a Studio installation, will ask me where Studio is installed. This is incorrect: the fix pack looks in the root location, fails to find Studio, tells me it is not installed (and must be installed before I can patch it), and terminates.

One of the documents associated with the fix pack says that this can sometimes happen because an XML registry file is damaged, and that the solution is to reinstall Studio. I found the registry file where it is expected to be, it appears undamaged to me, and in particular it contains the correct path to Studio. Reinstalling does not help.

Anyone have any ideas how to patch Studio when it is installed under /home/me/... ?

    Thanks

    Paul

There won't be an installer for a fix pack. You will always have to first install 12.6.0.0 and then install the fixpack over that.

So far this process has worked for me without a problem. I never install in the default location. I always get prompted for the install location (for the base install and the fixpack install).

Does it help to move away the XML file then reinstall 12.6.0.0 and 12.6.0.1?

In this particular case, in which you have access to both editions, I recommend to uninstall  "12.6.0.0 Academic Edition" before the install "12.6.0.0  Edition". If the uninstall has not been done, you should follow this note : http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21595620

You should be able then to install the 12.6.0.1 version in your wanted location.

    Hope this helps.

Please, let me correct my first paragraph in my previous post, you should read :

    <<<<<<<
The fixpack installer 12.6.0.1 works only with the "12.6.0.0 Edition" and "12.6.0.0 Academic Edition", but not with the "12.6.0.0 Preview Edition".
So you should be able to install the fixpack when you have only the "12.6.0.0 Academic Edition" installed.
    >>>>>>>

Fyi, I will report the need to better document this particular installation steps.

    Daniel and Christophe,

Thanks for the responses. I have resolved the issue. Apparently I am too gullible for my own good. As you can see in the attached image, the third entry (the one I downloaded) is described as a fix pack for Optimization Studio (Linux 64-bit). It is actually the fix for Enterprise Server (which explains not only why it would not install but why I kept getting log files with "Enterprise Server" in the name). In the second page of file listings (not shown), I found the correct fix pack, and it picked up the location where I had installed Studio without my having to tell it.
