Hi Nezih, sorry about the delay. we have hopefully resolved the issue. the back ground copy rate was set too high. we have set it to a zero rate and both sets went through ok over night because far less data to clean up for the stop process. thanks for your help with this.
Indeed the pauseless snapshots looks to be the way forward so we will look into this and run a test up in the lab.

Hi Stuart,
Did you try stopping it from the FlashSystem GUI? If so, how long does it take? And also could you please check the Chapter 8. Pauseless snapshots case study on our latest IBM Redbook "Supercharge Your IBM Storage FlashSystem: Performance Tips and Tricks" https://www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/sg248585.html

Hi Nezih, thanks for your reply. I have just checked, copy protection is not enabled. the issue is when csmuser issues the stop command we can see the consistency group the status of 'stopping' sometimes takes over 10 minutes. This is when we get the error in csm. we are not using a DRP pool as this was my first thought.
We are not deleting any volumes, its just a stop and start of the copies every evening, the source volumes also have safeguarded copies so I've made sure the safe copies and flashcopies are taken at different times so they don't overlap.

Hi Stuart,
The FlashCopy Stop Process may be affected by the Volume Protection feature in FlashSystem. Would you please check to see if Volume Protection is enabled on your FlashSystem? The default value for Volume Protection is 15 minutes. You can disable it or set it to a value under 10 minutes.

Hi, I have a problem with flash copy stop operation from CSM timing out. Is there a way to extend the 10 minute wait for flash copy operations via CSM or flashsystem command line? Any help would be appreciated, Thanks
