  • 1.  OPT1797 - Loading the Virtual tape image catalog in Library mode

    Posted 20 days ago

    Hi ,

I am planning to configure BRMS to use the Virtual Tape volume to load the image volume in Library mode. it fails with error OPT1797, System is not enabled for this function.

I found the following IBM support link about the simmilar issue.

Receiving Message CPFBC10 followed by OPT1797 when loading Virtual Optical Library image catalog into a virtual optical device.  ,

explaining to add the product access code!!.

Can someone help me understand the step by step procedure to enable BRMS backup on Virtual Tape volume in library mode like a VTL.

    Thanks, Haresh Patani

Just to be clear, are you talking about a separate device VTL (Virtual Tape Library)  like a Data Domain 6900 or some such thing?  Or, are you talking about virtual tape such as is served with WRKIMGCLG?  Because the link you provided seems to indicate the latter.

Hi Robert , Let me elaborate more on the solutions that i am looking at , basically , my client has IBM i V7R4 using IBM Protectier (very old VTL appliance) managed in BRMS , so entire IBM i backup is managed under BRMS on a VTL (IBM Protectier) using Virtual Tape volume and Virtual Tape drive defined in IBM Protectier . Now this technology is very obsolete , we wouold like to build the simillar setup using IBM i built in image catalog , defning tape image catalog , create a virtual volumes in tape image catalog  , load the image catalog in *LIB mode in a Virtual Tape drive and using it under BRMS the simmilar way as like IBM Protectier.  Is this possible?.  what is the function of "Library Mode = *YES in LODIMGCLG ?.  Does it mean loading the image catalog in Library mode would give me the function of like VTL ?.  How can i use BRMS automated backup on Virtual tape volume in Tape image catalog ?.

Thank you for the explanation.  I know how frustrating it is to try to find an answer to a particular problem but people keep asking for more and more basic background questions.  Knowing this, I'm going to do it anyway.

How do you plan on getting the image catalogs off of your system in case of catastrophic disk failure, malware encryption of your IFS, etc?

IDK what kind of disk drives your 7.4 system has but often times backing up to the same disk drives you are saving from can be slower than tape.  Modern tape drives are pretty fast.

As far as your original problem... my concern is with the message id you are getting: OPT1797.  Why are you getting an optical drive message with a virtual tape image catalog?  Can you show the parameters of your CRTIMGCLG, ADDIMGCLGE and any related commands?

I did read somewhere that IBM does have a cloud solution for taking such image catalog entries to the cloud

      - I will use IBM Flash system SAN storage, map the volume , define iASP , define image catalog on iASP , that allows me the varyon the iASP on other IBM i system.

     - have attached the screenshot  , created the tape image catalogue , defined virtual tape drive (TAPVRT01) , define virtual volume , loaded the image catalogue in virtual drive in *LIB mode *YES , failed with error!.

What the LIBMODE(*YES) functions does in loading the image catalogue?  , Does it allow the image catalogue functions like a VTL?.

First, I've never used this slide show option before.  Interesting.

There is this key on IBM i called F1.  It provides help on commands.  For example if I type LODIMGCLG and the command line and hit F4 I can prompt the command.  When I hit F1 on "Library mode" I see:  "For tape image catalogs, this parameter is ignored."  So I'm going to go out on a limb here and say this is not the parameter you're looking for.

Let's try something else. Forget about trying to load a particular image catalog entry.  After all, this is BRMS.  You need to add this device to BRMS.  You need to ensure that you have a media policy which will use this device. Then try backing up using BRMS to that device.  BRMS should decide what volume to load and do it itself.  I've used image catalogs with BRMS but that has been a long time ago.  I only used it to remotely move the tape to another system with an operator on site.
