    You should be using nmon 12e for AIX 5.1
    nmon -V should tell you the version. It is also in the nmon output file in the AAA section.

    It is most unusual that root fails to run and a regular user works.
    It would more likely to be the other way around.
    This will be due to some particular problem with your machine or root user account.

    By the way nmon has not opened /dev/kmem since the move to AIX 5.
