    The bosinst is for vios server version 2.2.1.0, my nim server is at level 6100-07-03-1207, so that can't be the problem.

    Apart from the NIM usual suspects like name resolution of the client and server (back-forth), I also have seen trouble with installios, not with certain vio releases, but with certain nim levels.

    at that time I worked around by using the HMC commandline "installios" which is based on nimol and didn't show the specific trouble.

I have the similar problem where i am not able to execute bosinst operation from command line & i get the same error message as you are. but when i go through smitty nim_bosinst, i am able to successfully enable bosinst for client installation. any help would be much appreciated.
