I need to do some developement with is but as far as I can tell we only have green on black text based access via Telnet or the like. Is there some sort of GUI desktop I can use to access the system. For instance, we use ISeries Navigator for exploring the ISeries machine on a PC.

    Thanks in advance

I still need help though. Can I link something like GNOME to our AIX server? Is there a WIndows based PC app that can do a similar job as we don't have linix installed on an PCs at work. I have an Ubuntu boot disk on my own laptop which I use sometimes but wouldn't be allowed to connect that the work network.

Some pointers here would be really helpful.

(Although your system administrator would have to have installed gnome)

I don't think that is really what you are looking for, though.

You are probably looking for a graphical connection from your
workstation to your AIX server, so you can export displays back to
    your workstation.

In that case, you are probably looking for something like Exceed, or cygwin.

Cygwin is open source, so if you have problems putting ubuntu on your network,
    Cygwin might be problematic.

Or maybe you are looking for some kind of integrated development environment, bceause
you mentioned coding. I don't know...The coding environment I use most on AIX is
cscopes, and vanilla VI. So, I am not sure what else might be available.

I think that you need to have a heart to heart with your systems administrator
to find out what you are really trying to do, and what tools he/she has installed
    to help you.

The question is a bit too vague for anyone here to provide useful information.

    Good luck,
    Casey

To add to Casey's reply, you have CDE, Gnome and KDE for GUI. Gnome & KDE require additional packages/libs from the Linux Toolkit CD.

For remote sessions you can use Xmanager also.

For remote desktop/GUI Session you can use VNC.
