  • 1.  New Navigator..again

    Posted Thu October 19, 2023 05:01 AM

The new Navigator is developing and new features comes.
TR3 is now released with new Navigator features. A new HTTP group PTF has been released with corrections of users, groups and more.
My question is: Is IPL nessesary for this installation then? what about the features in TR3, can that be installed if you have TR2 or is it depending of some databasechanges?
Since it will come several changes it should be easee to implement with no downtime.

    Dear Erik

The answer is in this IBM Technote : IBM Navigator for i - PTF Information at  https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/6486565. Please look at the section named "Steps to apply IBM Navigator for i PTFs:" and you will see that there is actually NO need to IPL when applying just PTFs for Navigator for i.  BUT it is not the best way to go as you may find some new features missing or do not work as they should due to their dependency to other related HTTP PTFs.   So, it is preferable to apply the entire HTTP group PTF which requires an IPL.  If you run a POWER8 servers or later model with all SSD, PTF application during IPL would not take more than some 10 minutes for HTTP group alone.

As for existing TR level before you apply this latest TR level, you can apply the latest TR level regardless of which existing level of TR you have. But please make sure you read HTTP group cover latter first to check if it requires special treatment or not, which should be a rare chance to happen nowadays.   I cannot find it now but will post later if I find it.

The question becomes:  What do you mean by database changes?  Do you mean changes in actual database layout?  Or do you mean new services provided by database enhancements?

Either way, I suspect that some functions may require the newer DB2 group PTF along with the latest HTTP group ptf.

The latest DB2 group ptf is due out 2023-11-17 as per https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/db2-ibm-i-2023-ptf-group-schedule

The latest HTTP group was released 2023-10-16 as per https://www.ibm.com/support/pages/node/6520030

There is a note in that site about a fix which does require a restart of IAS (not http).  No IPL was mentioned.

Now, IDK if there is a cross reference as to what functions will have to wait until the DB2 group ptf.
