  • 1.  Migration from BAW 22.0.3 to 25.0.1 in Windows in different machines

    Posted 14 days ago

I found in IBM documentation three options to Migration from BAW 22.0.3 to 25.0.1 in Windows in different machines.
    1. Migration from one machine to another keeping the same version and later do a in-place upgrade to 25.0.1
2.Clonning from one machine to another keeping the same version and later do a in-place upgrade to 25.0.1
    3. Migration to a already installed 25.0.1in another machine.

The two first options seems to be the better, but when I check the support , version 22.0 is not support anymore, so if I have problems IBM won't give me support.
The third option looks fine, but I don't find any IBM tool to migrate the process instances that are running!

    Can you advise?

    Hello Joao,

    1. and 2. options best way, many times i used its. IBM won't help if something breaks mid-step. But sometimes they can help, its a your chance.
I didn't experience any major migration issues. We tested it in a test environment and made our findings, and I recommend you do the same.
    3. options: Does not migrate live process instances. if you have active instances - you will lose all running workflows. IBM doesn't provide tooling for that and the database schema differs significantly between 22.x and 25.x.

    Hi,
That's what I thought. I have also used the option 1 and 2 in other places, but the BAW version was not in end-of-life. So, my concern here is that if any issue happen, IBM wouldn't help. But I am going on with it, I don't have any other option.

Thanks very much for your support.

You're right - since BAW 22.0.3 is out of support, options 1 and 2 carry some risk if you need IBM assistance. The recommended path is to migrate directly to an already installed 25.0.1 environment (option 3), even though it requires more manual work.

Unfortunately, IBM doesn't provide a built-in tool to move active process instances between environments. You'll need to finish or export them before migration, then import the configurations and snapshot data into 25.0.1.

If you want full instance continuity, consider opening an IBM support case for guidance before upgrading.

I decided that the best option will be:

    1. Upgrade the current machine to 25.x, the OS is old, but still in support, Windows 2016.
    2. Install the BAW 25.x in the new machine
    3. Test and validate the new machine while the old one continues to give service.
    4. After successful validation we can stop the old one
    5. Copy again the DB, since new process states will exist.
    6. And start the new BAW.

I just am not sure about the step Deleting the Event Manager instances.
What is the consequence of that? I believe EM has events that were created to happen sometime in the future, if I delete it, those events die before being triggered, right? This doesn't seem correct because they might be important for the business.

    Hi Joaa,

    When ready for production cutover:

      • Stop old BAW cluster completely.

      • Take a new database backup.

      • Do not delete Event Manager data this time.

      • Restore it to the new environment.

      • Start new BAW - it re-registers EM entries and resumes pending events normally.

    • Validate that Event Manager service is running and timers resume.
