I've got one new p6 550 (with internal sas disk) machine and I tried to restore mksysb image from other machine( 550 p5 with internal scsi drive)and following message was shown:

An invalid disk (00-08-00) was specified in the location field of the data file."
"to reboot the system, press reset."
    ">>>>> 1 Continue with Install"
The i pressed 1 and continued the process and as it started to restore it suddenly gave me following message:

    Please wait....

cannot open /dev/rmt0.1: No such device or address
Please mount volume 1 on /dev/rmt0.1
    ....and press Enter to continue

I thought it could be the problem due to damage tape cartridge then i again tried with another copy or system backup image but still the problem is same what could be the problem? please suggest..

Is there any thing else that i have to do to restore mksysb of p5 550 to p6 550?

    any suggestion will be appreciable.

    Thanks in advance

As for the tape drive error. Are you sure the rmt device is accessable by the P6 hardware? I can't remember for sure but I am thinking you could verify by going to the SMS menu and make sure the system is seeing the tape drive.

For example the p6 550 needs something like AIX 5.3 TL7 or TL8 I seem to recall, have you updated the mksysb before you move it as maybe it needs up to date AIX level to see the SAS tape drive...

I had to migrate from P4 to P6. This is the way I did it:

    1. Upgraded to TL9 (this was the latest so went for it, application compatibility was already tested).

    2. Connect the tape drive and allocate DVD drive to the new lpar.

    3. Boot off the DVD from sms (service mode) and select Maintainance mode, restore from system backup and then point to the tape.

    4. Follow the remaining screens and it restores and any additional device support required is picked up from the DVD.

    Hope this helps.
