  • 1.  Is Report Studio going to be deprecated? What happens to QUeries when upgrading to version 12?

    Posted Wed May 21, 2025 04:44 PM

I remember reading somewhere that report studio was going to be deprecated. I know about version 12 no longer supporting query studio, analysis studio and workspaces. But what about report studio? What even is report studio? Is that where you + New  -> Report?

OK, and while we are at it. What happens to queries when upgrading from version 11 to version 12. Query Studio is no longer supported but will we be given a chance to turn our queries into reports while in 12?

    @Brenda Grossnickle

Thank you for reaching out. We want to reassure you that there are no plans to deprecate Cognos Analytics Reporting. On the contrary, we're making significant investments to enhance its capabilities and make it even more powerful.

Cognos's enterprise reporting will continue to offer a highly flexible and customizable solution, with robust distribution options for both internal and external users. In our upcoming release, you'll see new features aimed at increasing interactivity for report consumers, while also providing authors with a more advanced and intuitive interface for content creation. We're very excited about the innovations our team is working on, and we look forward to delivering these enhancements to elevate customer satisfaction and overall experience. To clarify, Report Studio is indeed the same as Reporting.

IBM Cognos Analytics version 11.2.4 is the final release to include IBM Cognos Query Studio and IBM Cognos Analysis Studio. While these studios are being deprecated, existing Query Studio and Analysis Studio assets will continue to render automatically in Cognos Reporting without requiring recreation. To support a smooth transition, we've developed a Bulk Conversion tool that enables seamless migration of assets from the legacy studios to Cognos Reporting. Additionally, users have the option to manually convert individual assets within version 11.2.4, allowing for future modifications in the modern Reporting interface. For more information, including the official announcement and feature comparison documents, please refer to the blog linked here.

A little confused "While these studios are being deprecated, existing Query Studio and Analysis Studio assets will continue to render automatically in Cognos Reporting without requiring recreation. ". So after converting to version 12 what will happen to the queries? what does "continue to render automatically" mean?

Once the QS/AS assets are converted, all associated queries and filters become available in Cognos Reports. You can then continue to modify or enhance these assets just like any standard report.

    Hello Brenda,

I don't think the report studio will be deprecated and yes the report studio is where you + New  -> Report :)

Your Cognos admin will be able to Convert those queries to the report studio query one by one or they can use the Bulk Converter tool.

Please see the below link for more information about the converting multiple queries and analyses to reports.

    Thank you,

    Abbas

    Hi Brenda,

In my company, we wrote a SDK application to do this task with more intelligence than what is done with the converter OOTB.

This application has been used to properly convert more than thousands of queries.

Feel free to contact me if you need more information.

    Best regards,
