    if it is possible, I have never (in 15 years of AIX admin) seen it done. installp is a root command and to install from the bff files, you need to use installp.

    It depends on the format of the distribution you're using. Most AIX filesets are distributed as bff files intended to be installed with installp. I don't think you can change the pathnames given that. However, not long ago I downloaded a tiral version of the compiler which came as a tarball. You should be able to relocate that easily enough.
